Today I'm Sitting down to interview Stanford University student teams who are applying to this spring's Hacking for Defense® (H4D) course. Every year I'm stunned by the talent and energy these students bring to the course. If you are unfamiliar with the course or haven't kept up with its growth, here are 5 things you should know. 1. H4D leverages non-traditional student talent, working directly on problems sourced from the operating forces. The program also partners with allies to tackle common problems and rapidly scale new companies. 2. H4D is a global program. - 63 universities and 3482 students have worked with DoD mission partners from every Combatant Command. For the third year, H4D universities have partnered with our allies and universities in the UK and Australia to work on common problems. - This spring represents the largest cohort of H4 courses ever run. Between the US and UK there are 37 universities teaching 39 H4 courses, supporting 120 student teams with over 500 students. - There is growing interest to launch H4D courses in Sweden, Finland, Netherlands, Taiwan and India. 3. H4D grows high-impact companies. - Since its inception in 2016, of the 850 H4D student teams that have taken the course, 7.3% or 62 formed companies. Between them they have raised over $360 Million in private funding. 4. H4D connects the DoD to a diverse talent pool. - In Fall 2023 over 37% were female; 15% were Hispanic; over 13% were African-American or multi-racial. - 79% of the students participating in H4D during the Fall 2023 semester had no previous affiliation with the DoD. 5. H4D engages thousands of stakeholders each semester. - In Fall 2023 the US H4D program interacted with 1851 stakeholders while working on 40 problems sourced from across the DoD. Cybersecurity is a growing field that relies on a number of different expertise - particularly IT and Business. It is an area that someone with a background that does not include a lot of technical skill can excel. We want to encourage more women to enter this field - not only because it is a growing, well paid career choice but also because diversity within the field is imperative. Threats to online security are increasing, and increasingly diverse. A skilled workforce with diverse backgrounds and perspectives are needed to combat these threads. Investing in students now, will pay dividends in cybersecurity defense in the near future. Recently, I have been preparing for a qualification exam (I used to call it JAMB, not until I was called a village boy and told it was UTME - Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and was organized by JAMB - Joint Admission Matriculation Board) So this village boy from Ikorodu, unlike before decided to not attempt this with high optimism but with true preparation, hard work and dependence on God for grace. I enrolled for a tutorial and ever since it has been exciting meeting many interesting young people. Out of the many I met, I met some striking ones and learnt some interesting things from them 1. LinkedIn accounts are very high value accounts and 240+ - 500+ accounts sell for 60k - 100k+ (So dear friend, don't give up already, your account could sell for some good bucks - at the expense of your reputation though) 2. Illegal tech guys (yahoo boys) behind the glitz and the drip are very hardworking and resilient, they spend a lot of effort and end up getting minimal results because it's illegal and many times, nemesis always catches up with them and makes them lose scam opportunities. I did some convincing to get them to take a new look at things, and I was tagged a pastor, which made me happy though, but left me with a question.... How can we take an intentional approach to converting Yahoo Boys to Tech Bros? Convert the guys damaging our reputation globally to the ones making us proud globally. I don't have a perfect answer, but I am trusting God for grace over the next years, to drive a firm initiative that would teach out to these people and guide them right and it'll be greatly rewarding for all. While I anticipate this future, I am also inviting you and anyone who you know, The country is difficult yeah we know, but rather than letting difficulty force you or anyone around you down the path of cyber crime, You can upskill yourself and over the next few years build capacity, become a contributor to society and find elevation for your life and family.
