Continuing education/awareness, continuous monitoring, and assessments moving beyond regulatory requirements can help organizations proactively identify and fix vulnerabilities and weaknesses.

We're all very curious to read the after-action report from the MGM Resorts International #hack, but I'm guessing that network segmentation was not properly implemented, considering the breadth of areas affected (gaming machines, check-in, etc). Normally the systems affected would be on different networks (i.e. segmentation), so this is one of three things: 1)a very sophisticated attack by a persistent Threat Actor (TA) that lurked for a while, enabling them to hit so many systems, 2) an overly cautious CISO and exec team which is shutting everything down to ensure other systems aren't affected, or 3) very poor network segmentation.
