Last week the Henry Jackson Society put out a report by Andrew Fox that savages the Gaza death toll statistics of the Gaza Ministry of Health (MoH) and chastises the media for credulous reporting on the Gaza death toll. Here is my reply written with Gabriel Epstein of Israel Policy Forum. The Fox report can serve as a valuable teaching tool for how bad actors try to trick people with statistics. To take just one example, Fox finds some cases of Men misclassified as women on MoH lists of the dead and screams that the MoH has manipulated the numbers to inflate the number of women to make the IDF look bad. But these are just a handful of cases that don't move the needle on the percentage of women and there are roughly an equal number of cases of women misclassified as men. So it's just random error, inevitable in a huge database built under the most challenging circumstances imaginable, not intentional manipulation. Of course, MoH figures are not sacrosanct and it is appropriate to scrutinize them. But Fox doesn't identify any important flaws, just trivia. Sadly some parts of the media gleefully jumped all over this report, e.g., The Telegraph and the Times of Israel. I'm afraid that this report won't go away. But nobody should take it seriously. https://lnkd.in/eC7izmpV

This is Sargodha. In yesterday's press conference, if instead of bullying and threats, the formation of a committee was announced and the students were assured that we stand with you and will investigate what is the matter. If the TV footage will be released and the students will be completely reassured, then children would not be on the streets in the whole of Punjab. #UndeclaredMartialLaw #اپنا_ادارہ_ٹھیک_کرو #مینڈیٹ_پر_ڈاکا_نامنظور #ایاک_نعبد_و_ایاک_نستعین #MandateThieves #RespectMandate Please follow PTI's official YouTube: PTI Official: https://lnkd.in/gnNdV9YU PTI Official English: https://lnkd.in/gVEhbvSF Imran Khan Official: https://lnkd.in/gm-Hpm36 Amnesty International Human Rights Watch International Monetary Fund European Parliament UK Home Office Department of State International Court of Justice (ICJ).United Nations Bloomberg The Independent Financial Times The Guardian ThePrint The Economic TimesThe Economist Reuters The New Arab The Rio Times The New York Times Atlantic Council The Intercept The Wall Street Journal Global News Real International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) BBC News China Daily The Daily Telegraph FoxNews24X7.com BBC Wales News Sky News Arabia Al Arabiya News Channel Al Jazeera Media Institute Euronews الجزيرة بودكاست WorldNews Parliament of Australia Election Commission of Pakistan European Commission #humanrightsviolations #security #people #network #broadcasting #business #Fascism #JudicialSystem #stopdiscrimination #trading #PakistanUnderSeige #Jobs #Opportunities #PakistanUnderFascism #money #legal #film #corruption #corrupt #politicians #netflix #innovation #digitalmarketing #technology #creativity #futurism #startups #innovation #management #HumanResources #technology #leadership #digitalmarketing #creativity #Future #futurism #Careers #Markets #marketing #SocialMedia #VentureCapital #SocialNetworking #LeanStartups #Economy #Economics #sales #contentmarketing #advertisingandmarketing #strategy #jobopening

Misinformation can spark conflict, as seen during the crisis in Bangladesh in July 2024. In my latest commentary pulished by Bangladesh Institute of Peace and Security Studies (BIPSS), I dive into how disinformation from neighboring state distorted the reality of violence, fueling fear and communal tension between nations. It’s a wake-up call to combat fake news with fact-checking, responsible journalism and stronger media literacy. Let’s stand up for truth and regional peace! 🌍💡

A recent study by the Centre for Media Monitoring (CFMM) has found the right-wing news outlet GB News of promoting anti-Muslim hate, claiming its reporting fosters civil unrest and exacerbates community tensions. The report, titled GB News: A Snapshot of Anti-Muslim Hate, argues that the channel has a structural and systematic bias against British Muslims. It highlights that GB News mentioned Muslims or Islam over 17,000 times, accounting for 50% of such mentions across UK news channels, with most of the stories portraying Muslims in a negative light. The study criticises GB News for its “excessive” focus on Islam and Muslims, which it describes as bordering on obsession and regularly demonising their beliefs. It also claims the channel misrepresents Muslims, spreading Islamophobic tropes and misinformation, especially on topics like grooming gangs, Sharia law, and extremism. This portrayal, the report says, risks inciting violence and discrimination against Muslim communities, particularly during periods of social unrest, such as last summer’s riots, where Muslims were unfairly linked to the violence. This portrayal, the report says, risks inciting violence and discrimination against Muslim communities, particularly during periods of social unrest, such as last summer’s riots, where Muslims were unfairly linked to the violence. The CFMM's report also calls out Ofcom for failing to regulate GB News effectively, noting the channel’s continued use of Islamophobic narratives without challenge. The regulator has previously fined GB News for breaching impartiality rules but has not taken action on the larger issue of bias in its programming. The report underscores the importance of supporting honest, independent Muslim media to counteract the harmful effects of biased news coverage. As the report notes, these misrepresentations have real-world consequences, contributing to rising anti-Muslim sentiment and violence. It calls for stronger regulatory measures to ensure that media outlets like GB News are held accountable for their content. Following the Southport attack and subsequent widespread far-right riots, new research by ISD and CASM Technology quantifies growth of anti-Muslim and anti-migrant hate on Telegram and X. Analysis of 45,000 posts across 55 British far-right Telegram channels revealed anti-migrant hate rose by 246% and anti-Muslim hate by 276% in the ten days following the attack, with hateful comments peaking on 4 and 5 August. Such spikes in anti-Muslim and anti-migrant hate took the form of both overt slurs and hashtags, and more covert conspiracies. The X hashtag #TwoTierKeir promoted the idea that rioters were being unfairly targeted and relates to the longstanding far-right narrative that Muslim communities receive preferential treatment by law enforcement or other national bodies. Such borderline content may not be immediately recognisable to mainstream users as hateful, but nevertheless serves to amplify far-right conspiracies. This type of content on mainstream platforms contributes to the continued mainstreaming and normalisation of the othering of Muslim and migrant communities. https://lnkd.in/dtEwDgbr

Pakistan's Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, has defended the country's decision to ban the popular social media platform, Pakistan X, citing that it is in the "best interests of Pakistan". The ban, which was implemented earlier this week, has sparked widespread outrage and concern among citizens and human rights groups, who argue that it is a form of censorship and a violation of freedom of speech. According to Minister Dar, the ban was necessary to protect national security and prevent the spread of harmful and blasphemous content. He claimed that Pakistan X had failed to comply with the country's laws and regulations, and that the platform was being used to promote hate speech and extremism. The minister also stated that the government was committed to upholding the country's values and protecting its citizens from harmful content. Despite the government's claims, many have expressed skepticism about the true motives behind the ban. Critics argue that the move is a clear example of censorship and an attempt to silence dissenting voices and opposition groups. The ban has also raised concerns about the impact on freedom of expression and the ability of citizens to access information and share their thoughts and ideas. As the situation continues to unfold, many are watching closely to see how the government will respond to the backlash and whether the ban will be lifted or made permanent. . . . #PakistanX #SocialMediaBan #Censorship #FreedomOfSpeech #HumanRights #PakistanGovernment #IshaqDar #NationalSecurity #HateSpeech #Extremism #FreeSpeech #DigitalRights #OnlineCensorship #PakistanNews #socialmediaregulation #tribunetrends
