On October 22, 1955, the Republic F-105 Thunderchief made its first flight, marking the beginning of its storied career as a U.S. fighter-bomber. Serving with the United States Air Force from 1958 to 1984, the F-105 was capable of reaching speeds up to Mach 2. Originally designed as a single-seat nuclear attack aircraft, the F-105 evolved into a versatile platform, later producing a two-seat Wild Weasel variant aimed at suppressing enemy air defenses. Known affectionately as the "Thud" by its crews, the Thunderchief was armed with an impressive array of weapons, including missiles and a rotary cannon, and could carry bomb loads exceeding those of some World War II heavy bombers like the B-17 Flying Fortress. Throughout its service, over 20,000 sorties were flown by F-105s, but it earned the unfortunate distinction of being the only U.S. aircraft removed from combat due to high loss rates 382 out of 833 produced were lost, including 62 in non-combat situations. Lockheed Martin takes next step in homeland missile defense interceptor acquisition process In November 2023, Lockheed Martin successfully ompleted a Missile Defense Agency (MDA) acquisition milestone for the nation's modernized long range ballistic missile interceptor. The company completed the first Knowledge Point – known as KP1 – ahead of schedule, taking a major contractual step forward that allows its Next Generation Interceptor (NGI) program to continue development towards the Critical Design Review (CDR). During KP1, the MDA evaluated Lockheed Martin's development progress to date. This includes completing design review milestones and demonstrating significant maturation across critical technologies, manufacturing readiness, and utility of the company's NGI Software Factory. 👀 Northrop Grumman is pitching its famed ATHENA missile warning sensor as the US Army’s Improved Threat Detection System. Short for Advanced Tactical Hostile Engagement Awareness, ATHENA was designed to elevate aircraft protection and survivability by enabling 360-degree situational awareness. The THAAD missile defense concept was proposed in 1987, with a formal request for proposals submitted to industry in 1991. The THAAD program benefited from results of previous missile defense efforts like High Endoatmospheric Defense Interceptor (HEDI) and the Kinetic Kill Vehicle Integrated Technology Experiment (KITE). In September 1992, the US Army selected Lockheed (now Lockheed Martin) as prime contractor for THAAD development. Prior to development of a physical prototype, the Aero-Optical Effect (AOE) software code was developed to validate the intended operational profile of Lockheed's proposed design. The first THAAD flight test occurred in April 1995, with all flight tests in the demonstration-validation (DEM-VAL) program phase occurring at White Sands Missile Range. The first six intercept attempts missed the target (Flights 4–9).
