First steps are hard. They require careful planning, calculated risk, and most of all, courage. We took a daring first step earlier this month with the completion of TA-1’s first powered flight, reaching high supersonic speeds approaching Mach 5. The flight was a landmark moment on our path to providing our customers and nation a reusable and routine hypersonic test capability. Stratolaunch’s Dr. Josh Stults, Vice President of Advanced Programs, and Dave Fedors, Sr. Test pilot, recently joined Ken “Primetime” Katz on an episode of The Fighter Pilot Podcast to talk about the behind-the-scenes preparation and outcome of our first powered flight of Talon-A1 and what’s ahead as the team prepares for the launch and recovery of the first reusable Talon-A2 vehicle later this year. The trio discussed the TA-1 mission from start to finish, including the processes of mating Talon-A1 to Roc and fueling the Talon-A1 propulsion system with liquid oxygen and Jet A propellants. They also conversed on the rapid development timeline of the Talon-A2 vehicle and what it means for the country’s ability to conduct routine hypersonic flight test. Stratolaunch’s Roc launch platform took off for its first integrated flight with the Talon-A2 (TA-2) vehicle this morning over the Mojave Desert. This is the 19th flight of the world’s largest flying aircraft, and the first fueled captive carry of the TA-2 hypersonic vehicle. TA-2 is the first fully recoverable testbed, equipped with landing gear. The objectives of the flight test were to validate our thermal and aerodynamic models at the higher operational altitudes recently established during envelope expansion and monitor the new flight systems in TA-2 that allow landing and recovery.
