One thing I loved about living in Europe is how easy it is to get around - internationally but also locally, and especially by bike. The cycling infrastructure is next level, and I often think how wonderful it would be if our Australian and New Zealand cities embraced urban cycling to the same extent. This article explores whether it's better to proactively create safe and well-designed cycleways to encourage cycling or monitor existing patterns and build infrastructure to suit the evolving demand. The EU has announced its 'European Declaration on Cycling', including dedicated new funding and policy support to promote bike use and the bloc’s cycling industry. As well as formally recognizing the vital role cycling can play in decarbonizing the bloc’s transport sector, the declaration makes cycling a strategic priority. The proposed policy and investment to build new cycling infrastructure is part of EU efforts to achieve the aims of its European Green Deal initiative, Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy and Zero Pollution Action Plan. #europeofcities #europe #cycling #netzero #sustainability #smartmobility

Breaking news: The EU Cycling Declaration text will be published around 10am tomorrow, followed by a press conference with EU Transport Commissioner Adina Valean at 11am in Plaza de San Francisco in Seville. We understand that it will have a comprehensive list of commitments which include policies on encouraging cycling, investments, industry and data, which is a strong overlap with the topics we wanted to see included in a comprehensive roadmap for cycling in EU Policy. This feels encouraging, the European Commission wants to go public with the proposals and they have pulled it forward before the official opening of the Urban Mobility Days conference. Today, the EU took a major step forward in promoting the most inclusive, affordable, and sustainable mode of transport: all Member States and EU institutions have signed the European Declaration on Cycling. Why is this important? Because the Declaration includes clear commitments, such as creating safe and coherent #cycling networks in #cities, improving links with public transport, and providing secure parking spaces and access to recharging points for e-bikes. These commitments are set to be implemented at the EU, national, regional, and local levels - meaning there's a good chance you'll see these changes in your town, city, and region. Personally, I am particularly pleased not only because I love cycling but also because this was the last initiative I worked on before leaving DG MOVE last year. #CyclingDeclaration #transport #EU
