Virtually every town in America hosts some kind of car-restricted event, whether they think of them as pedestrian and bike-friendly or not. And if more cities can use them as an opportunity to pop-up car-free routes to the festivities, they could make the case for permanent paths everywhere.

Came across this funky promo for Friendly Streets - https://lnkd.in/gtNBgC9C Loving the enhancements which are welcomed, but I will love to study their effectiveness considering the complex interactions between users (motorists, cyclists, pedestrians (PWDs, parent with a pram, elderly etc. i.e. of varying mobility)) and when demand fluctuates (e.g. after school with throngs of students). As an aside, there are other initiatives to make our streets truly friendly. For one, we can retain spruced and lush green verges as buffer. In some places like Hougang Ave 2, they were removed to make way for cycling paths or replaced with railings. Shelter and seats can be provided (where feasible) to create places of chance encounter and respite. Shops, eateries, and recreational spaces (attractors) can also line the streets so that one can easily locate and access meaningful amenities. With that, hopefully our streets can function as more than just links and be brimming with activity!
Ministry of Transport (MOT) on Instagram: "Let the dancers from @noooice show you how these #FriendlyStreets features will make our streets safer and more inclusive!"

WHY WE SHOULD HAVE MORE CAR-FREE STREETS: In addition to the social value, there are also indications that car-free streets can boost the economy. Montreal's experience has led it to open more streets since the program started. The existing businesses on the car-free road reportedly saw a boost in their sales. Mayor Valérie Plante also attributed a drop in Mont-Royal's vacancy rate for commercial buildings — to 5.6 per cent in 2023 from 14.5 per cent in 2018 — to the car-free project. Projects to improve walkability in cities have also reduced air and noise pollution levels. Paris reduced ambient noise by 2.5 decibels on its first "Car-Free Day." Istanbul saw a 32 per cent reduction of nitrogen dioxide in four years after pedestrianizing 295 streets. Air pollution from cars and other gas-burning sources has been linked to serious health problems. In 2022, transportation was Canada's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases in Canada. https://lnkd.in/dAtH-atG

Scheduling open houses during local summer events can attract more visitors by leveraging the increased foot traffic and community engagement these events generate. When people attend festivals, markets, or parades, they're already out exploring the area. By aligning your open house with these activities, you create an opportunity for attendees to conveniently drop by, increasing the visibility and appeal of your property. Entertainment zones are shaping the future of urban nightlife, and San Francisco’s Front Street Oktoberfest is a prime example. With live music, outdoor seating, and street closures, these spaces bring a new vibrancy to downtown areas. The recent designation of Front Street as California's first official "entertainment zone" underlines how such initiatives can breathe life back into cities, attracting visitors and boosting the local economy. By simplifying the permit process and encouraging regular events, cities can create thriving hubs for community and culture, proving that a vibrant nightlife isn’t just good for fun—it’s good for business. #NightlifeEconomy #EntertainmentZones #UrbanRevitalization #CommunityEvents #SupportLocalBusiness https://bit.ly/3zGZQso

#Paris2024 organisers planned for 100% of spectators to arrive at events using public and active transport. Interconnected venues are key to the success of majors sporting events and successful host cities. Jacobs’ placemaking and transport planning teams focus on integrating public and active transport solutions into precincts; collaborating to explore, assess and validate route options and typologies. Our Movement and Place approach looks beyond getting from A to B to achieve broader activation, subtropical design and community benefits, and provide safe, all abilities, legible, intuitive access - day and night. Our approach includes: ▪️ Activating the ‘last mile’ between public transport stations and key sporting destinations. ▪️ Enhancing walkability in urban centres by prioritising pedestrians, shared zones, scramble crossings and shady, comfortable verges. ▪️ Integrating cycle corridors into inner city streets and waterfronts to balance corridor capacity and amenity. ▪️ Creating active recreation loops through destination open spaces that support community events such as parkrun. Sustainable public and active transport connection are a catalyst for urban renewal precinct activation, creating hubs that are people and place centric. #CitiesandPlaces #Placemaking #SocialValue #SustainableFutures
