America has poured enough asphalt to build its sprawling auto-centric road network to cover the entire nation of the Netherlands, according to a new study — and in the process sacrificed trillions of dollars worth of land that could have been put to better uses like housing.

Useful tips. Thanks for sharing K The need for passenger rail is growing every day. Increase utilization of rail passenger service will: enhance economic development for Rural, Tribal and Urban communities, improve road safety and provide a healthier climate for future generations. Tracks are back!!
“I think there's a tendency to view the land [upon which our roads are built] as free — to not acknowledge that it might be put to better uses, like housing and shops and parks and other things that we care about," said Erick Guerra, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania and the lead author of the paper. "I mean, hopefully, we care about [those things] more than asphalt; the whole point of the transportation system is to get us to shops and offices and houses and parks and friends.” - Streetsblog USA FYI Arizona Department of Transportation Arizona Department of Environmental Quality ADEQ PIRG Strong Towns ALL ABOARD WASHINGTON All Aboard Northwest ALL ABOARD MINNESOTA Big Sky Passenger Rail Authority RailPAC PNWER Regional Infrastructure Accelerator https://ow.ly/HfxY50TaOtm

Here is a longer video of "River Lines", which I discussed earlier in the week. This Infrastructure for the Human Spirt at The Gaslight District in Cambridge Ontario involves community storytelling, public play with strangers and a sense of agency or choice for the public. This is how a city plays. #placemaking #cambridgeontario #waterlooregion #joyexperiments #urbandesign #urbanplanning #publicspaces

On this day in 1937, the iconic Golden Gate Bridge opened to vehicular traffic, forever transforming the landscape of California and the lives of its residents. More than just a marvel of engineering, this project was a beacon of hope during the Great Depression, creating thousands of jobs and invigorating a community in desperate need of economic relief. The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge employed over 10,000 workers, providing much-needed income and stability to countless families. In a time when the national unemployment rate soared to nearly 25%, the bridge project not only connected San Francisco to Marin County but also helped lift the spirits and livelihoods of an entire region. Today, as we navigate through challenging economic times, it's inspiring to reflect on how large-scale infrastructure projects can serve as catalysts for recovery and growth. The Golden Gate Bridge stands as a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of Californians, reminding us that even in the darkest times, we can build a brighter future. As we face a grim market today, let’s remember the power of collective effort and ambitious projects. The Golden Gate Bridge wasn’t just about steel and concrete; it was about giving people hope, purpose, and a path forward. Let's channel that spirit of determination and innovation to overcome our current challenges and build a prosperous future for all. #GoldenGateBridge #EconomicRecovery #GreatDepression #Infrastructure #Hope #California #Resilience #Innovation #History #Community

Stanislaus County is taking a crucial step towards improving transportation experiences for all modes by preparing a land use and transportation plan for the South 9th Street Corridor. This corridor serves as the main link between downtown Modesto and Highway 99, and the county's goal is to enhance its interface between commercial, industrial, and residential land uses. The South 9th Street Corridor plan will help to support a variety of uses and infill development, ensuring that the corridor is accessible and functional for all. #transportation #infrastructure #landuseplanning

Riverside Bridge in Christian County is Sinking? Sunday, March 31, 2024 Christian County Highway Department Phone: (417) 581-2112 ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES 1106 W Jackson St Ozark, MO 65721 Highway Administrator Miranda Beadles, P.E. Please call 417-582-4389 County Roadway Superintendent Brent Young Presiding Commissioner for Christian County Lynn Morris (417)582-4304 lmorris@christiancountymo.gov Ozark Special Road District Barbara Hover - PRESIDENT (417) 581-1632 Open Letter Sent out: Sun, Oct 8, 10:07 PM Dear Lynn Morris, Commissioner of Christian County, Ozark Missouri I am writing to you as a concerned citizen and a frequent user of the new Riverside Bridge that spans the Finley River in Ozark, Missouri. I have noticed some signs of settling or movement at the embankment of the bridge, which I believe could pose a potential safety hazard for the bridge users and the nearby residents. I have done some research on the internet and found some links that show the construction process and the design features of the bridge. Here are some of the links that I found: [New Riverside Bridge opens in Ozark]: This is a news article that reports the opening of the new bridge on November 7, 2020. It mentions that the bridge has two 12-foot lanes and a 10-foot-wide pedestrian and bike lane. It also states that the bridge is 11 feet higher than the old bridge, which means it is less prone to flooding. [Riverside Bridge Project]: This is a webpage that provides information about the project background, timeline, funding, and partners. It also has a video that shows the relocation of the old bridge to a nearby site next to the historic Ozark Mill. [Riverside Bridge Design]: This is a PDF document that shows the design drawings and specifications of the new bridge. It includes details such as the bridge geometry, cross-sections, elevations, foundations, abutments, piers, girders, deck, railings, lighting, and drainage. Based on these links, I have some questions and concerns about the bridge settling or movement. First of all, I wonder if the bridge has any expansion joints or other devices to accommodate thermal movements due to temperature changes or solar radiation. I know that some bridges do not have expansion joints and use integral abutments and semi-integral piers instead, but I am not sure if this is the case for the new Riverside Bridge. #springfieldmo #nixamo #land #ozarks #bransonmo #republicmo #local #joplinmo #ozark #sgf #missouri #bestof #rogersvillemo #mag #springfieldmissouri #ky #kolr #news #kspr #sgfmo #showmespringfieldmo #downtownsgf #girl #bransonlanding #lovespringfield #bolivarmo #bransonmissouri #spots #springfield #ozarkmo #springfieldmo #nixamo #land #ozarks #bransonmo #republicmo #local #joplinmo #ozark #sgf #missouri #bestof #rogersvillemo #mag #springfieldmissouri #ky #kolr #news #kspr #sgfmo #showmespringfieldmo #downtownsgf #girl #bransonlanding #lovespringfield #bolivarmo #bransonmissouri #spots #springfield

A massive project to rebuild and widen Interstate 77 between uptown and South Carolina is becoming even more expensive — perhaps making it more likely the state will turn to a private developer to build and manage it. The NCDOT has long planned to add two state-operated express toll lanes in each direction from uptown Charlotte to the state line. But because the highway runs through the heart of the state’s largest city, widening it from six lanes to 10 will be costly. Every bridge over I-77 would likely have to be torn down and rebuilt. And almost the entire 12 miles of the highway would need to be redone because of the topography; steep drop-offs next to much of the highway would require adjust the elevation of the adjacent land. Find out if and how this $3 billion project - likely the state’s most expensive highway project ever - might realistically get done. 📷 Photo from Google Street View Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/e89Rc9Kc #thecharlotteledger #transittime #cltledger #WFAEWFAE

Nice to see a softer urban edge cleaning water at the new Aquarium floating wetlands at the Baltimore Harbor. For it to be more than symbolic we need more of the same. The Third Bay Bridge will release a torrent of suburban sprawl within the sensitive watershed of the Free State. No one has studied the ecological impact of all the new strip centers, flex space development, spec offices, housing subdivisions, outparcels, etc… and all the ensuing new road work the new bridge will provide access to in the future. Whatever happened to the 2020 growth bill ? Whose job in the State bureaucracy is it to protect the watershed and encourage focused growth with dense footprints (build cities and towns) while leaving the watershed alone to thrive ? Baltimore has lots of developed land the needs to be reworked. Crickets… Guv ? https://lnkd.in/eKvWvSmn
