This bill would finally require regulators to do what advocates say they should have done years ago: stop giving five-star safety ratings to huge trucks and SUVs that are virtually guaranteed to kill a pedestrian on impact.

The US is proposing new vehicle regulations targeting the rising dangers posed by oversized trucks and SUVs to help reduce pedestrian deaths. 🚗 New regulations: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has proposed its first-ever rules requiring automakers to redesign vehicles to reduce pedestrian fatalities. ⚖️ Key focus: The rules aim to curb the growing trend of larger, heavier trucks and SUVs, which are shown to be more deadly in pedestrian crashes. 🦺 Pedestrian safety: The new standards would involve testing vehicles for pedestrian safety using crash test dummies for both adults and children. 📈 Rising fatalities: Pedestrian deaths have risen 57% over the last decade, emphasizing the urgency of these new safety measures. 💡 Industry pushback: Automakers have often prioritized technology over vehicle design for safety, as larger vehicles generate higher profits. 🇪🇺 Europe’s lead: Safety advocates point to Europe’s stricter pedestrian protection regulations, urging the US to follow suit. #PedestrianSafety #TruckRegulations #AutoSafety 🚦 Broader impact: In addition to vehicle redesign, lower speed limits, better infrastructure, and stronger traffic law enforcement are needed to fully address road safety. 🌍 Global comparison: While these rules mark progress, the US still lags behind Europe in protecting pedestrians from oversized vehicles. https://lnkd.in/gtn7u9ng

When Will Drunk-Driving Detection Be Mandated on Light Vehicles? Written by David Lee Cullen The U.S. is taking steps to curb drunk driving with a mandate for new cars to have drunk driving prevention technology. However, it won't be in effect for a few years. - Legislation passed in 2021 requires NHTSA to set a standard for the technology by November 2024. - Installation in new vehicles is expected to begin by 2026 or 2027. - The technology will passively monitor drivers for signs of impairment from alcohol, inattention, or drowsiness. This new tech is a positive step towards road safety, but fleet operators should still have strong anti-impairment policies in place. In 2023, United States pedestrian deaths reached a 40-year high. Heavier vehicles significantly worsen road wear and tear and increase tire particulate pollution. Currently, Minnesota has no regulations to disincentivize the use of heavy or oversized vehicles. In America, vehicles have rapidly become bigger and heavier. Automakers prioritized SUVs and trucks over smaller models due to their higher profit margins. The increasingly large US vehicle fleet is a major contributor to the pedestrian safety crisis. Take Action: The Minnesota legislature must address this issue by modifying registration fees to account for vehicle weight and size. https://lnkd.in/gxVDHKxy #pedestrian #pedestriansafety #streetsforpeople #mnleg #policy

Don't you love it when government gets into design? Of course I am being sarcastic, but the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stunned safety advocates by proposing new vehicle rules that it says will help reduce pedestrian deaths in America. The new rules appear aimed directly at the trend of increasingly massive SUVs and trucks, which have been shown to be more deadly to pedestrians than smaller and midsize vehicles. If enacted, the new rules could change how vehicles are designed in the US — permanently. Time will tell if it is good or bad. #design #regulation #governmentoversight #automotiveindustry

NHSTA Proposes to Reduce to Serious-to-Fatal Injuries in Child & Adult Pedestrian Crashes https://lnkd.in/gJ8KDPUh auto connected car newsThe National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is advancing pedestrian safety by proposing a new rule to reduce fatalities and serious injuries among pedestrians struck by vehicles. The proposed rule would establish a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requiring new passenger vehicles be designed to reduce the risk of serious-to-fatal injuries in child and adult pedestrian crashes. In 2022, 88% of pedestrian fatalities occurred in single vehicle crashes. The proposed rule would apply to passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less, including multipurpose passenger vehicles (trucks, SUVs, crossovers and vans). Data show that fatalities of pedestrians

Please Share Your Insights! NHTSA has proposed new vehicle safety standards to better protect pedestrians and is accepting public comment at the link below. The proposed rule would establish a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard requiring new passenger vehicles be designed to reduce the risk of serious-to-fatal injuries in pedestrian crashes by establishing test procedures to simulate head-to-hood impact and performance requirements to minimize head injury risk. The proposed rule would apply to passenger vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or less including trucks, SUVs, crossovers and vans. https://lnkd.in/eKsPm-UC

Reminder to comment on NHTSA's proposed rule for pedestrian head protection by 11/18/2024! Your comment can be as simple as, "I support this proposed rule," or can go into more detail. I reviewed much of the 238-page docket and urged NHTSA to: 1. Go further to include testing for frontover risk, 2. Mandate the testing for shorter and flat hoods, and 3. Mandate the testing at higher impact speeds than are currently planned. Testing the head protection at higher speeds (> 25 mph) is particularly important given that NHTSA is currently relying heavily on new requirements for pedestrian automatic emergency braking (PAEB), which will no doubt increase safety but which is known to be less functional in darkness -- the very time that pedestrians are most at risk. Feel free to draw from my comments as you submit yours: https://lnkd.in/gWKHDAh9. And if you're a vehicle design expert and have additional thoughts, please leave them in the comments!
NHTSA has issued a proposed rule to create a new Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) that would ensure that passenger vehicles, including large pickups and large SUVs, are designed to reduce the risk of serious to fatal child and adult head injury in pedestrian crashes. NHTSA is accepting comments for 60 days on the proposed stringent test procedures that align with global standards. If you'd like to comment please read this technical rule carefully and provide your specific feedback here: https://lnkd.in/e4mnbrHX or through regulations.gov. #visionzero
