Day #4 of Cycle for Hope Fundraising: We've hit $20K! ❓️Why do I cycle? No, I'm not a cycling enthusiast- usually just using the bicycle as a means to get from point A to B. I've never spent more than $350 on a bicycle 🚲 Cycling is a way to save time, keep fit and save money, but also affords me time to reflect and think instead of banging away on my phone/laptop... I am fully awake and fully present, or it gets dangerous ⚠️ In our world of distractions, notifications and brands/media companies reaching out for my attention at every moment in time, cycling provides a brief respite. 💡In recent days, I cycle for more than pragmatic reasons though... In training for the 2000km expedition (and possibly longer if the donation target is reached by 10th May 2024), I know that conditioning my body for this journey is essential. I cycle for the stateless people who have little to no other good healthcare alternatives. I cycle for the hundreds of thousands of children growing up in the Thai-Myanmar border where their certs will likely not be recognised by either countries. I cycle for Hope, because one cannot live a moment without it. ⛈️ The storms of life may come, winds and waves WILL strike, but rather than trying to change what I can't or throw in the towel at the bigness of the problem, I choose to take small and manageable steps with my big and mighty God. I believe that we each can nudge the status quo toward a more positive outlook starting first by not turning a blind eye to the issues we're been made aware of and then persevering to see a better tomorrow. 🦵When my calves are acheing and feet is blistered, I will remember this little note to self. Please consider supporting the Mae Tao Clinic and making my life a little harder: https://bit.ly/2000cycle #fundraising #cycling #cycle #hope #bangkok #singapore #perspective #motivation #learning #reflection #thanksgiving #campaign

Step 1: Decide to do something to raise awareness and funds for mental health and suicide in Australia Step 2: Run 29 marathons in 29 days Grateful for all of the support provided on this journey so far! A grim reminder that just under 9 people fall victim to suicide each day in this country. The first step to fixing this is to raise awareness.
One marathon is a challenge, but what about 29 marathons in 29 days? That's exactly what one of our good humans has decided to do this month. HerCanberra sat down with Andrew Myssonski yesterday and unpacked his motivations for a such an incredible challenge. If you'd like to show Andrew some support, make a donation to R U OK? through this link: https://lnkd.in/gcJ2Ya_u

In 25 days I will be running my very first marathon. What a gift that it will be at the NYC Marathon. My running journey started in Jan. 2022. I was burnt out, overworked, and just not in a good place physically or mentally. Aside from working and running a small business, I was homeschooling my kids and carrying much of the burden at home as a military wife. I needed an outlet. I decided to pick up running because I was too self-conscious to pick up weights in a gym full of people. I also started running because I love being outdoors. I started with no real goal other than to keep moving and have a few precious moments to myself. There was no real plan to run any races, lose a certain amount of weight, or even be fast. But, as time went on, I felt like I needed a challenge and to work towards something specific so that I would remain consistent. I signed up for the Dec. 2022 OUC Half Marathon in Orlando. Most of training I did alone. I started off with the shoes I had and my Apple Watch. I didn’t even own headphones at the time, so I would borrow my husband’s. I downloaded a free training plan from the Nike Run app. I didn’t know much about pace and running zones, or to carry gels or some kind of fuel for longer runs. I started with what I had and my knowledge base grew over time. The day of my first race I was sick. I had flu-like symptoms. Any normal person would’ve been smart enough to sit it out. I decided to still run, feeling like I had put in too much work to not see things through. Having also struggled my entire life feeling like I never have something to show for my hard work, I felt like not running the race was not an option. So I ran. It was difficult and not pretty, but I ran the course and crossed the finish line. The recovery afterwards was brutal and I will never run another race sick again, but I learned something that day for the first time at 33 years old: I can do hard things. I am capable of more than I give myself credit for. Running has been an incredible gift. The sport and its community has enriched my life in ways I never imagined it would. I am healthier and stronger, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Not every run goes according to plan, but the work is never ever wasted. If you’ve read this far, thank you. I share all of this because one way I have chosen to pay it forward is by running with Team for Kids at the NYC Marathon. I committed to raise crucial funds that support vital running and community programs for youth in underserved communities. As a mother to 5 boys, I know all too well the massive financial commitment it takes to have kids in any kind of sport. While my family is fortunate enough to have the means that allow my kids to have access to these opportunities, not every family can say the same. I am just over 12 hours away from my fundraising deadline. I am not giving up yet. Please consider donating via the link below. Thank you in advance for your support.

Over the next eight weeks, we'll share expert tips to help you and our fellow running community prepare for the NYC Marathon on November 3rd. As Leonardo da Vinci said, "Water is the driving force of all nature." 🌿 This week, we're starting with the foundation of every great run—hydration! Why Hydration is a Game-Changer: Hydration isn't just about quenching your thirst. Staying properly hydrated helps maintain energy levels, prevent muscle cramps, and boost your overall endurance. Hydration can genuinely make or break your marathon performance. Here's how to hydrate smartly for success: Hydration Hacks You Can Start Now: 1️⃣ Pre-Run Hydration: Begin your day with a glass of water and keep sipping throughout the day. Aim for 16-20 ounces of water about an hour before your run. 2️⃣ During the Run: Carry a water bottle or plan your route around hydration stations. Sip small amounts every 15-20 minutes to stay on top of your hydration game. 3️⃣ Post-Run Recovery: Replenish lost fluids with water or an electrolyte-rich drink to accelerate recovery and reduce muscle soreness. Emily and Laura Brawn have been enthusiastic supporters of 4Theo, participating in the Northampton Half Marathon for the past two years to raise funds. When it was proposed to form a team for what should have been Theo’s 10th Birthday in 2025, they both immediately signed up. This led them to register for the Edinburgh Marathon in May 2024, as a trial run! Another friend inspired them to enter the New York Marathon in November 2024, which sparked the idea of completing 3 marathons in 12 months to raise money. Most of their friends and family would describe them as the equivalent of Duracell Bunnies. They regularly participate in various fitness events and run, so they both enjoy 'type 2 fun.' After hearing comments like 'You love running, so it's easy to raise money,' they began to question if three marathons in 12 months were challenging enough to raise funds. So, the challenge is set: 12 months of HARD fitness events! Training for a marathon requires a significant time commitment, especially for two individuals who are not full-time athletes. They are planning to take on three marathons, four half marathons, one 20-mile event, two Hyrox events, and three functional fitness events (with more to be added). They both have demanding jobs and lives to manage during the training to prepare for these events. Picture lots of running in the rain and freezing cold during the winter months, dragging themselves to the gym early to complete sessions, and even running a half marathon before work to fit in the training! They wanted to launch the page before Edinburgh, so there are some adjustments to be made, including adding more events! However, as the best ideas are often conceived in 60 seconds! This Sunday, I’ll be taking on my first-ever half marathon at Goodwood race track in the UK, alongside my wife Grace Denny, her brother, and his wife. We’re running to support Cure Parkinson's and their incredible work, inspired by my wife’s grandad, who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s a few years ago. His approach to tackling the disease has been remarkable—throwing himself into understanding it, exercising daily, and facing it head-on with admirable determination. Running has been a long journey for me. From reluctantly starting 15 years ago (and inflicting shin splints on myself with alarming regularity due to my appalling technique) to completing the BM10K in 2017 alongside other University of Sussex runners, it’s been up and down. Tearing my ACL and meniscus in a skiing accident in 2019 was a major setback, but getting back into running through rehab during the pandemic helped me recover, both physically and mentally. Those runs, by Dutch beaches, around central Amsterdam parks and along forest trails and river paths here in Heidelberg, have made exercise something I (almost always) look forward to. I know times are tough for many, with so many causes needing support right now. But if you can spare anything for our family fundraiser, however small, it would mean the world to us and to those living with Parkinson’s. Cure Parkinson’s is dedicated to finding treatments that change how this progressive disease impacts the lives of sufferers and those around them. Parkinson’s is the fastest-growing neurological condition globally, with over 153,000 people in the UK affected, and that number is set to rise. Right now, there’s no cure to slow or stop the disease, but with the right funding, there is hope for a cure and effective treatments. Any support you can give would be massively appreciated—thank you! Find out more about Cure Parkinson’s here: 🔗 cureparkinsons.org.uk And if you’re able to donate to our GoFundMe page: 🔗 https://lnkd.in/en4UGXR7
