When do we start hiring software engineers for their problem solving skills rather than filtering them by how many years of experience they have in a particular tool or programming language? You don't see job description for gardeners that must have 5+ years experience using Honda HRN 536 VK Petrol Lawnmower, or drivers must have 10+ experience driving Tesla model S. That would be ridiculous. I'm sure a better than mediocre software engineer should be able to transfer their skills over to other programming languages when they need to. What's tough to learn? Syntax? Libraries? Frameworks? None of these should be beyond comprehensible. After all they should be created with usability in mind. So what are the more useful skills we want to see from a software engineer? Their structured approaches towards unseen problems, their abilities to work in uncertainties, their critical thinking ability, their software design skill, their experience in some common design patterns and good practices, some common data structure and understanding the time complexity of common algorithms, most importantly their ability to learn and pick up a new tool or programming language in jobs. I love to see more companies posting their job ads with language-agnostic, showing their appreciation for the real qualities of good engineers.

How to know you’ve hired a GREAT product engineer: They over-communicate about what they’re doing. Engineering leads can become conduits who ensure everyone is working in sync on the right things, at the right cadences. But this requires a collaborative approach from the engineers. So, find engineers who make over-communication the standard. A Players know: The collective output is greater than the sum of individual efforts.

Many software engineers are only to focus on the tasks assigned to them, ensuring that the stuff gets done. I've observed that important decisions, such as defining requirements or asking the right questions to the client, are made by product managers or project managers. After these decisions are made, engineers step in to handle implementation, scaling, and other technical aspects. Very few software engineers ask why we are doing it. Very few take an interest in understanding the impact of the product decisions made. 𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁-𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗳𝘁𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿? 1) Passion and curiosity for the product 2) Provides both technical and business solutions 3) Customer Centric 4) Ownership Mindset 5) Ask for the feedback Let's shift our mindset. As engineers, we're not just builders; we're innovators, problem-solvers, and, most importantly, contributors to our product's success. Junior engineer: Leaves code they touch in a better state than when they found it. Senior engineer: Identifies issues that slow the team down and drives changes to fix them. The jump from junior to senior requires a shift to thinking on the team level. Issues that slow down the team often require collaboration and influence to solve. For example, imagine dead code is slowing the team down. A junior engineer would make some individual contributions to alleviate the issue. A senior engineer would socialize the problem to get buy-in. Then once people are aligned on the issue, lead an effort to get rid of all the dead code together.
