Too often, we forget that the buildings around us are not just a backdrop for our daily lives but have their own stories. Unfortunately, older buildings sometimes do not meet the modern needs of the users, so they are torn down and replaced. The St. Landry Parish Office of Economic Development hired Calhoun Preservation to conduct an approximate 400 building survey of historic resources in their downtown area to expand the Opelousas Historic District. This survey is step one. Step two is a survey report to be submitted to the State Historic Preservation Office. Step three is submitting a National Register of Historic Places nomination *AMENDMENT* to expand the district. After this process is complete, the contributing buildings will be eligible for Economic Incentive Programs under the Secretary of the Interior. At this point in the survey process, I am purely photographing, gathering information, and mapping out an appropriate boundary for the expansion. There have already been areas that I reckon will not be included in the final expansion, however, this is part of the process. Survey it all, and carve out appropriate districts that have a common narrative of evolution. Follow along while I tag the buildings that I've captured via photography so far in my walking and window-surveying! Already, locals have sent me some information that I may include in their survey forms, as well as the NRHP nomination amendment form. Thank you!
