When our paths crossed again at different stages of our journey.

I had a great catch up with an old colleague and friend, Lifei Cheng in Shanghai recently. We both worked for the same company couple of years ago. Now, we’ve both left corporate MNC life and started our own businesses.

He is the Founder & CEO of MedTecX, a medtech company with its own R&D, manufacturing, and sales & marketing capabilities in China and the US. They’ve attracted significant investment and have been focused on developing advanced solutions for a few key areas with huge unmet needs, particularly in urology.

Some people believe that the golden era for big pharma and MedTech MNCs in China has passed. Once enjoying huge profits and growth, they now face a much more competitive environment with new policies in place and Chinese companies started to catch up. MNCs are losing their halo effect, which is quite a natural development for a country like China. 

One of the biggest assets these MNCs left behind in China is a large pool of talented Chinese professionals. 🇨🇳 Having learned from their experience with MNCs, these individuals know how to manage complex organisations. They are also well connected to the international healthcare community and have accumulated extensive experience in the full cycle of healthcare product management. 

Now many of them have chosen to start their own business and contribute to the Chinese healthcare industry by developing world class products to compete with the global giants. 

Lifei is one of such individuals. His company and his team have all the ingredients for success. 

I’m glad that our paths crossed again. This time with a lot more similar stories and relatable learnings.

Despite sharing quite revealing findings about mislabelling in the US pet supplement space, the feedback from the industry was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited about the new partnerships and opportunities that already have emerged from this event. 🔍 Global Market Screening Results: Our annual global market screening of omega-3 supplements confirmed a concerning trend. This time we included about 50 products from the main e-commerce channels in both North America, Europe and China — and as in earlier screenings, we also this time found that up to 50% of products are mislabelled. This underscores the critical importance of our mission to increase transparency and authenticity to consumers in the global omgea-3 market. 💼 Revenue Growth: We are thrilled to announce a 25% growth in revenue for the first half of 2024 compared to last year! This remarkable achievement reflects not only our team’s hard work but also the deepened relationships with our existing clients. China is the West’s corporate R&D lab. Can it remain so? CHINA IS, FAMOUSLY, the world’s factory and a giant market for the world’s companies. More unremarked is its growing role as the world’s research-and-development laboratory. Between 2012 and 2021 foreign firms increased their collective Chinese research personnel by a fifth, to 716,000. Their annual R&D spending in the country almost doubled, to 338bn yuan ($52bn). My recent trip to Hakone resonated deeply with the Japanese concept of mono no aware, the bittersweet beauty of impermanence. As a registered pharmacist with a keen interest in business development and strategy, I'm constantly reflecting on ways to improve healthcare delivery. Mono no aware (物の哀れ) reminds me that progress is a journey, not a destination. Just as the majestic Mount Fuji, forever associated with resilience, endures the changing seasons, our healthcare system must adapt to meet evolving needs. New technologies and treatment options emerge, while established practices are continuously refined. Embracing mono no aware allows us to celebrate these advancements while acknowledging the ongoing challenges, finding meaning and purpose in the small victories along the way. Singapore's healthcare system is a shining example of constant adaptation. Our public-private partnership model has fostered innovation, while our focus on preventive care has yielded impressive health outcomes. Yet, challenges remain. An ageing population and rising chronic diseases demand new approaches. Just as the cedar trees on Lake Ashi weathered countless seasons, our healthcare system must be adaptable. Telemedicine and digital health tools hold promise in improving access to care, especially for geographically isolated communities. Additionally, harnessing data analytics can help us identify and address emerging health threats proactively. The bare cherry blossom trees standing tall with the sunset in the back at 宮城野早川堤の桜 served as a reminder that even in decline, there's beauty and resilience. Similarly, Singapore's healthcare system, while boasting world-class facilities and a skilled workforce, faces limitations. Accepting these limitations allows us to focus on continuous improvement. Investing in preventative care and early detection programs can help us manage chronic diseases more effectively. Finally, the geothermal energy that nourishes Owakudani's hot springs is a metaphor for the interconnectedness of our healthcare ecosystem. Just like the hot springs, a healthy healthcare system relies on a strong foundation – a skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, and ongoing research and development. Here in Singapore, public-private partnerships play a crucial role in fostering innovation and ensuring the long-term sustainability of our healthcare system. June 6, the date reminds me again of the question: What makes a truly useful, capable, and trustworthy #consultant? When I took over the leadership position of a global #agency about 10 years ago, I got the task of retaining one of the firm's most important global clients - pharmaceutical giant Alliance Boots. After a few rounds of discussions by the team with the Greater China-based executives, I was told the client's global communications head is coming from France to see us before they make the final decision. The meeting happened as planned. The gentleman had about 2 hours of "routine" discussions, patiently listening to our presentation about our firm and new service team. Happy. Relieved. Then he said to me: we still have a second half of the meeting. Let's take a coffee break. Coming back, Mr. Global Head said he wanted to ask me three questions: 1, Do you know June 6? 2, Can you tell me anything about Liu Shaoqi? 3, Is Citroën popular in China? Why or why not? It turned out June 6 is not only the important anniversary of D-Day but also a date related to someone extremely dear to himself (happening to be one to myself too). It turned out Liu Shaoqi was once China's head of state prior to the Cultural Revolution - a piece of important history. It turned out the ups and downs of foreign auto brands have been a very important windsock of China's market opening. I was lucky we retained the client with a new deal. But that meeting has become perhaps the most unforgettable client meeting in my whole career. I'll skip a thousand words here to conclude: we got to know much more than just the so-called "expertise" to convince and win the trust of clients who do value #consultants.

A 3-week vacation can be considered long or short. Depends on how you look at it…   🌏 Just back shortly from a rejuvenating holiday in China - immersed in delicious food, cherished family time and social networking with friends, peers and relatives… Yet, amidst this personal retreat, China's current medical device market has refreshed my perception of it…   🎙️ I had the privilege of meeting some of the key figures in the Chinese Medtech ecosystem. I exchanged views with them and had informal discussions on how overseas medical devices companies can enter the Chinese market as well as issues related to Sino-European cooperation in medical technology.   🔍 Their insights were so pivotal that I felt compelled to capture and share them. These discussions crystallized for me just how rapidly technology progresses in China and the intensifying competitiveness of its markets, even in post-pandemic times. Their insights are very much in line with Mr. Ning Zhang and Dr. Yongjie Ma's views, whom I interviewed recently.
