This past week my colleague and I had the opportunity to present and discuss the discharge of an emergency patient on a provincial committee with Emergency Care BC. Debbie and I both have a passion for providing appropriate information and discharge instructions at the time a patient leaves the emergency department. If a patient is being sent home and told they could possibly have cancer and they will be going for the following tests and to see certain specialists. We know after the word cancer people stop listening and have a decrease in ability to retain information. This is the same for many patients even for simple plans as the human brain can only retain so much information at once. Therefore, we are to give patients verbal and written instructions. Is this concept new? Absolutely not! How do I know? When I was first diagnosed with SVT as a child I was sent for much imaging, testing and specialists at The Hospital for Sick Children. My mom was given written information. How do I know? She had saved everything regarding my heart condition, "just in case". What is new? The innovation of technology and progression of how we can provide instructions. Much has changed since the hand written note and we has healthcare providers need to be on board to use new tools and explore different ways to teach and provide information to patients and their support people. February is #HeartMonth and a special time for my family and me personally and professionally. It’s a reminder that we are lucky to have my father after finding his aortic stenosis before it was too late. His journey to a healthy heart was a fluke-but it doesn’t need to be. What many of you may not know is that heart health screenings can begin in your #PCPs office during an annual, in an #urgentcare , or even an #emergencyroom. Half of patients 50 and over, who have a #cardiacriskfactor (think #diabetes, #hypertension, etc) and who also have a clinically significant #structuralheartmurmur are being missed through traditional methods of listening to the heart. At Eko Health #SENSORA™️ we are doing something that no other company is doing. Our SENSORA™️ technology is doubling the detection of those murmurs, that would otherwise get missed, with a point of care exam that can be completed in approximately 1 minute.
