I always enjoy time with thought-provoking Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) leader Peter Mason. Among the items covered in this 20-minute look at the local politics of delivering 1.5M New Homes, are Local Plans, and how effective they are at giving people the sense they are involved in shaping change. "Dry strategic documents can be things that turn people off," Peter acknowledges. They have to be imbued with a "vision for the future, a sense of security, about how their community is going to change, what they can expect by way of economic growth, housing growth, investment in schools and parks and open spaces". "If you can bring the detail of technocratic language into some clear concepts of how change is going to happen, you can get involvement." That and lots more below...
Today we’re talking about the local politics of delivering new homes, with Ealing Council (London Borough of Ealing) leader, councillor Peter Mason. Describing the challenges facing London in the 1940s (air quality, long commutes, and tall buildings rising on the skyline of an increasingly crowded city) He says: "They were dealing with some of the same challenges we have now. The answer for them was new towns.” Along with housebuilding in the context of regional planning, industrial strategy and creating a fairer national economy, we also talk about what communities want from growth, and Local Plans and estate ballots as mechanisms for getting it. "If we can give people the sense that their community is changing in a positive way, and that they're moving forward in their lives and their children are moving forward, we can unlock some of this ‘for and against’ mentality." We have all been touched by stories of individuals and families struggling to find secure housing. This should not be the case in the modern world, especially in the UK. Empty homes in Pembrokeshire, Wales, hold untapped potential to change lives. We have already facilitated an additional 40 units of accommodation in 2024 alone from empty properties and we are only just scratching the surface. The Issue Over 2,000 empty homes dot the Welsh landscape, 450+ in Pembrokeshire alone. Meanwhile, countless individuals and families await safe, affordable housing. A job the local council should be doing for sure, however we can do it faster and can solve more problems quicker. The Opportunity Your investments into empty properties can: 1. Revitalise communities 2. Provide warm, secure homes 3. Support the local economies 4. Foster dignity and hope Join Forces Let's collaborate to: 1. Identify and renovate empty properties 2. Create affordable housing solutions 3. Strengthen community bonds Together, We Can 1. Address housing shortages 2. Boost local businesses 3. Enhance quality of life Interested in making a difference?
