How can deforming a piece of sheet metal be so effective in fabrication? You've seen how a blacksmith can take a lump of metal and slowly form it around an anvil to create armour, but metal deformation has taken a huge step forward since then and it doesn’t need a furnace to create a lot of the forms we use today in fabrication. Yes, again at Stannah Group I had the opportunity to learn and use their CNC punch machines to create their stairlifts, a lot of my involvement was to improve the process, but what does punching involve? Punching involves using a Punch / die and stripper to create forms in sheet metal (other materials can be used). Process includes 🛠Punching 🛠Cutting 🛠Forming 🛠Marking 🛠Combination tools 🛠Burnishers 🛠Slitting 🛠Countersinks 🛠Deburring Benefits and capabilities ⚙ Speed (but the noise is an issue) ⚙ Can run lights out using a pallet loader ⚙ Unlike lasers, punches can form useful fastener connections like thread that saves additional processes later ⚙ Cost when accounting for the speed and used within fabrication processes ⚙ High precision shapes and parts made by this process ⚙ Efficient use of material via nesting parts together to reduce waste ⚙ Combination machines between punching and lasers are available drawing on the benefits of both Downside 🔥Noise 🔥Not really optimised for complex shapes or geometry 🔥Limit to material sheet thickness 🔥Designing needs to be considered, features like threads/forms etc need to have minimum distances between each other to allow for the tooling Manufacturers include TRUMPF Amada GmbH Have you used this process?
