Here are some of the preliminary drawings for our new office. In another life I could be a commercial developer or draftsman. Getting work closely with Dj Cleek of CleekCo through the site layout and meetings with the City of Fortuna has been a really fun experience so far. Parking regulations, maintaining safe lines of sight for driving, ADA access, etc. are all things I’ve been adjacent to, but never knew how much I didn’t know about it. Designing a building that serves a completely different purpose than a home is also interesting. Instinctively you may think the curb appeal and attractiveness of a commercial building would matter less than a custom home, but oddly enough it seems to almost matter more in some ways now that I’m in the nitty gritty of it. It’s a place you and other professionals come, in short, to attempt to become more successful, inspire and impress clients, and the building and the lot it’s on play a huge role in all of that. At least in my opinion.

How do you build a #grannyflat in Orange County? 📌 Contact local planning and building departments to understand ADU laws and codes in your area. 📌 Obtain information on ADU codes, size, height requirements, and other technicalities specific to your city. 📌 Develop a realistic understanding of what is allowed and what is not based on gathered information. 📌 Acquire ADU plans from an architect or qualified draftsman, considering cost and quality variations. 📌 Hire an electrical engineer and possibly a structural engineer for calculations, ensuring structural safety. 📌 Obtain necessary reports like soils, grading, and drainage plans as required by the city. 📌 Seek city approval for the completed plans to obtain building permits; be prepared to pay permit fees. 📌 Once plans are approved, and permits are secured, initiate the construction of the ADU. 📌 Consider hiring a general contractor for construction, with a project manager overseeing the process. 📌 Consult an interior designer for advice on finish materials such as countertops, flooring, wall coverings, and fixtures. Segmental Box Girder in Civil 3D / Revit 👀 See video below (5:00) Out of curiosity I had a play with building a segmental box girder model with an arched soffit to pressure test some of my modeling methods. Criteria I wanted to achieve 🔰 ▶ Sketch based girder profile (for easy optioneering) ▶ Ability to follow curved alignment (horizontal and vertical) ▶ Ability to follow curved soffit. ▶ Ability to build shape in segments to suit desired lengths. How I achieved it 🔰 ▶ Civil 3D Assembly - Mark points for static parts of profile and LinkSlopeToElevation for soffit points. ▶ Civil 3D Profile - Sketched the girder soffit on profile view (long section) and created an alignment profile. ▶ Corridor Target Offsets - Built a corridor and mapped the girder soffit targets to follow the Soffit Profile. ▶ Loft Solid / SAT to Family Method - Lofted the solid using my "Loft by Featurelines" script and "Import SAT as Family" script #bridges #boxgirder #dynamo #revit #civil3d #automation #computationaldesign #digitaltransformation

Concrete is essential to construction. Yet, few understand how involved the process is for producing concrete. Exact measures, exact mixtures (fly ash particularly), correct flow into the ready mix truck, skill plant operators, equipment working properly, each step of the process requires detailed oversight. Being able to understand the process through 3D animation and breaking down each step into its components to allow evaluation leads to the quality concrete expected by customers.
