As a truss designer, the majority of my work involves calculations and software-based design. However, a crucial aspect often overlooked is the field component. This involves direct interaction with engineers, framers, and clients at job sites. Has this been part of your role as a truss designer? I've found it to be an invaluable experience, but also a unique set of challenges. From language barriers to technical explanations, the field can be demanding. I'm curious about your experiences: * How comfortable are you with on-site interactions? * Do you handle field visits yourself, or is it delegated? * What are the most common issues you encounter? For new designers, these interactions can be intimidating. How do you approach training new hires for this aspect of the job? Let's share our insights and help each other navigate this essential part of the truss design process. #trussdesign #construction #fieldwork #engineering #constructionindustry #design #challenges #careerdevelopment

Diaphragm Walls and Slurry Walls: Guardians of Structural Integrity Diaphragm walls and slurry walls stand as stalwart guardians in the realm of construction, especially when the foundation demands nothing short of robustness and structural resilience. These formidable walls aren't mere components; they are the silent sentinels ensuring stability in the face of challenging soil conditions and spatial constraints in bustling urban landscapes. 🏗️ Versatility Unleashed: Their prowess lies in versatility. These walls adapt, customizing thickness and reinforcement strategies to meet the unique demands of diverse projects. Whether facing high lateral loads or anchoring deep excavations, diaphragm walls prove their mettle, earning their place as essential components in construction projects. ⛏️ Excavation Ballet: The genesis of these walls involves a choreographed excavation ballet. In the creation of diaphragm walls, a trench is delicately carved into the earth, filled with a slurry mixture—a dance of bentonite clay and water. This slurry isn't just a medium; it's a shield, preventing the collapse of trench walls during excavation. 🌊 The Slurry Symphony: Slurry walls, in particular, play a symphony of engineering precision. The slurry mixture holds the trench in its gentle embrace, providing the necessary support for the impending concrete intrusion. It's a delicate balance, a dance between excavating and reinforcing, orchestrated to perfection. 🧱 Reinforced Strength: Concrete enters the stage, displacing the protective slurry. As it sets and solidifies, it metamorphoses into a sturdy vertical wall. This wall, be it diaphragm or slurry, becomes the backbone of deep excavations, underground structures, and retaining walls. Its structural integrity is not just a feature; it's a commitment to enduring strength. 🌐 Environmental Harmony: What sets these walls apart is not just their might but their minimal impact on the environment. They stand tall without leaving an indelible mark, a testament to the harmonious integration of engineering precision and environmental consciousness. In the grand narrative of construction, diaphragm walls and slurry walls are not mere elements; they are chapters etched in the language of strength, resilience, and adaptability. Hybrid working....a deal breaker for sooo many designers out there! Some of the studios I work with are asking for designers to return to the office more-and-more and I know it's a tough pill to swallow. (I have a 5yr old - I get it!) Other studios continue to offer 1 or 2 days from home however most will ask for you to be in the office 5-days a week during the 3-6 month probation period and then hybrid thereafter. Since covid, I've seen a complete shift in people's priorities with more people prioritising work/life balance over money, projects or title. The question is; are studios really listening to this shift in values, or are they in fact becoming ever more misaligned and creating a stalemate within the industry. Feel free to message me to find out more about the below positions and more importantly, if the studios who are looking, are "good listeners" or not. 🖤
Quick recap on this week's "live " vacancies; 👉 Residential Designers - Midweight & Senior (all-rounder skillset, AutoCAD) 👉 Hospitality Designers - Midweight & Senior (all-rounder skillset, AutoCAD or Revit) 👉 Restuarant Designer - Senior (all-rounder, exceptional detailing, AutoCAD) Some of the studios I work with offer hybrid working 1 day at home, others offer 2 days at home. I know this is a deal breaker for a lot of designers out there so send a message to me to find out more.

We’re hiring for various roles (3D Visualiser, Interior Designer, Modular Factory Manager, Draughtsman) at Wood Be Done and we are also trying to pay at least a LITTLE more than what the market standards are right now, as much as is in our capacity. We do get candidates on a regular basis too. BUT the problem is, inspite of having the readiness to give complete creative freedom and also of paying more, it’s so hard to find the right people! Each candidate comes with a list of softwares they can use and the list of companies they worked for. But where’s the work?? After hiring (we give some assignments and tests) why do you NOT know any technical details about most of the stuff that should be different in different cases?? I don’t even care if you’re not extremely capable, finished and polished product. But at least let your work should show that you did it with all your heart! After every feedback you get, your work should show improvement or SOME changes the next time you do it! It’s been really disappointing lately. Capability nahi rahegi to bhi koi baat nahi hai, lekin dil se karo to sahi apna kaam! Capability apne aap tezi se build hogi!
