Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University is advancing plans for a 500-bed residence hall, designed to align with the campus's traditional aesthetic while incorporating modern features. The facility will replace the former Gibbs Hall and Paddyfote Complex and maintain the Georgian brick style of nearby halls. Estimated at $60 million, the four-story mixed-use building will include retail and office spaces alongside state-of-the-art living and learning amenities. This initiative complements FAMU’s ongoing construction of Venom Landing, a 700-bed modern residence hall set to open in fall 2025. With plans for additional projects like an 800-bed apartment complex, FAMU aims to increase on-campus housing to 4,000 beds, enhancing student recruitment and retention while fostering a vibrant campus community. https://ow.ly/ekCm50UFouL JRA Architects David M. Dartmouth College undergraduates are now living, studying and socializing in transformed residence halls in East Wheelock House. Our team--Harriman, Sasaki, Gale Associates, Inc., North Branch Construction and Thornton Tomasetti--upgraded accessibility, life safety, building systems and interior spaces at Andres Hall, Zimmerman Hall, and Brace Commons, East Wheelock's social center. The buildings meet standards for LEED Gold and are designed to be compatible with Dartmouth’s shift from oil-fueled steam to geo-exchange hot-water heating and cooling. The renovations are part of the college's plan to revitalize 60% of on-campus student residences over the next decade. The recent Explore Offsite Awards shone a spotlight on our latest student living scheme – 31 High Street in Southampton, which received two industry awards, including the coveted Winner of Winners Award. 🌟 This scheme is a pioneering regeneration project in Southampton, which represents a £12m investment by Stelling to develop a prominent and highly constrained city centre site using advanced modular technology. 🏗 The original listed stone façade of the former Bank of England building has been restored and a five-storey modular extension has provided 121 high specification, self-contained studio apartments to help meet the critical undersupply of student accommodation in the city. Jose Ignacio Alvarez, our Founder and Executive Chair: “31 High Street demonstrates the enormous potential of our offsite construction solutions and the technical capabilities of our teams – from architectural design to manufacturing, offsite fitout and on-site refurbishment of a locally listed building." “This site is completely enclosed on three sides and would have been extremely difficult to develop using traditional construction methods.” “To deliver a scheme of this scale in just a few months and to such high quality, sustainability, energy efficiency and architectural standards, is an incredible achievement." “It also showcases really well how offsite construction can be applied to regeneration and refurbishment schemes, as well as to new build residential developments.” Read more here - https://lnkd.in/e6q9xXTd #studentaccommodation #mmc #offsite #offsiteawards #residential #studentliving

The Architects’ Journal has published a new building study on the Bennetts Associates designed Edinburgh Futures Institute. As a fine example of Scotch Baronial architecture, designed by David Bryce in the 1870s, it was not the most obvious canvas on which to create an institute for the future… Through a comprehensive programme of repair, reconstruction and creative adaptation, the design not only demonstrates that listed buildings can be enhanced without detriment to the original, but also that low carbon-re-use of an existing building can be stimulating and responsible. Read the full article, here: https://lnkd.in/epfdM6Zh James Nelmes, Director at Bennetts Associates, said: “There are not many projects of this scale and complexity that you start out on where you don’t really know what it is yet. But the fact that the plan is so strong and the building is so powerful told us what we needed to do…we could get on with it and make robust, big, flexible spaces.” For more information about our work visit www.bennettsassociates.com #EdinburghFuturesInstitue #Architecture #Re-use #HeritageBuildings

The Secretary of State has approved plans for the next phase of a mixed-use regeneration scheme at Cambridge North, on the derelict former railway sidings land next to Cambridge North Railway Station and Guided Busway Interchange. The development is being brought forward by the Chesterton Partnership, a venture comprising Network Rail Property, DB Cargo (UK) Limited, and development partner Brookgate. Since 2020, ACME has been developing the masterplan on this complex public brownfield site surrounded by a varied tapestry of development. It is a truly mixed-use residential-led development with life sciences at the heart of its identity. The scheme will deliver 425 mixed-tenure new homes and 5,000 sqm of flexible ground floor space for cafes, shops, bars, and community spaces. New public realm and green spaces will enliven an accessible new urban neighbourhood as a gateway from Cambridge North Station to the wider North East Cambridge area. The scheme will also deliver 53,700 sqm of commercial space, including provision for new laboratories and offices. The integration of landscaping will preserve the existing identity of the site in the Cam River Valley and its identity as a new urban quarter belonging to Cambridge. The scheme provides extensive green spaces and material improvements to biodiversity. It also responds to the climate change challenge with energy—and water-efficient buildings and by encouraging the shift to more sustainable means of transport. New, accessible public spaces, such as Chesterton Gardens at the heart of the residential quarter and a new civic space, Chesterton Square, will provide social spaces for all. A ‘wild park’ of planting, with a pond habitat, will be a green, biodiverse space for visitors as well as those who live and work at Cambridge North to enjoy. The proposals will see a significant net gain in biodiversity of over 80% and will involve planting in excess of 340 new trees and providing landscape areas on building roofs. Make Architects is designing One Cambridge Square and the lab buildings at 1-3 Station Row, while ACME is designing One Chesterton Square, Two Milton Avenue, a Mobility hub, a lab building and the Residential Quarter. Redevelopment of No. 15 Foss Islands Road, York – Student Accommodation - - - This redevelopment presents a unique opportunity to create a high-quality, sustainable, and contextually sensitive student accommodation complex that enhances the urban fabric of York while providing a valuable resource for the city's student population. By carefully considering the site's context, integrating innovative design solutions, and prioritizing the well-being of both residents and the surrounding community, this project sets a new standard for student accommodation in York. The existing property, characterized by poor architectural quality and a fragmented townscape, is replaced with a modern, purpose-designed building offering a range of comfortable and functional living spaces for students. This proposal responds to the site's challenges, repairing the townscape and integrating comfortably within the surrounding context. The design respects the character of the setting, particularly the adjacent conservation area and the historic city walls, to improve the visual appearance of the site. It contributes positively to the streetscape of Foss Islands Road and Elvington Terrace and regenerates the disjointed urban grain by creating well-defined frontages and incorporating landscaped courtyards. Architecture is more than just the physical structure of a building – it’s fundamental to shaping how people experience and interact with the space. This is especially true when it comes to learning environments, where considered design can foster creativity and collaboration, and inspire greatness. From primary schools to universities, well-designed educational spaces can directly influence students’ academic success, teachers' effectiveness, and an overall sense of belonging. In primary and high schools, architecture plays a critical role in creating safe, engaging spaces where young minds can explore, learn, and grow. Open classrooms, natural light, flexible spaces, and easy access to nature can stimulate curiosity and encourage interactive learning. These elements support the development of critical thinking and social skills in students, while allowing them to feel more comfortable, supported and inspired. Having had a hand in the delivery of multiple learning spaces over the past 12 months while assisting Reitsma Constructions Pty Ltd, Rohrig Constructions, Stephen Edwards Constructions and Novati Constructions deliver for their clients, we’re keenly aware that great buildings are more than just functional. Whether it be the Northern Beaches Christian School’s STEM centre, Our Lady of Mercy College Parramatta’s Brigid Shelly building, Pymble Ladies' College’s Grey House Precinct or Mount Carmel Catholic College’s Woodwork, Science, Technology and Applied Studies building, each of these structures has been purposefully designed and constructed to embody the values and aspirations of the institutions they house. Serving as a testament to Australia’s world leading approach to learning spaces is Darlington Public School in Chippendale, which beat all comers to win the World Building of the Year Award in the schools category at the 2024 World Architecture Festival. "The result of the project is poetic, a building in which topography and landscape, inside and outside, form and materials, flow seamlessly in an unexpectedly delightful way. It is also an inspirational proposition about the acknowledgement and reconciliation of historic difference - a pointer to brighter, better futures for all", WAF's Programme Director, Paul Finch, said of the project. Well deserved recognition for fjcstudio and A W Edwards on their achievement! 📸Image Credit: Brett Boardman 🎥Video Credit: Richard McGlone #Architecture #LearningSpaces #CampusDesign
