Black History Month starts today. Join Tutor Room is celebrating the contributions of everyone to our communities and supporting the multiculturalism and diversity that shapes them. Schools across the UK will be using Black History Month as an opportunity to discuss inspirational Black and Mixed Heritage people throughout history, that future generations can look up to. RECLAIMING NARRATIVES This year, the theme of Black History Month is reclaiming narratives which focuses on sharing stories of Black history and culture, as well as correcting historical inaccuracies. It will include less well-known and untold stories, as well as stories about famous historical figures. Listening to these stories, and learning about historical figures and their achievements, can inspire the younger generation to DREAM BIG. Here are some links to find out more. Recognizing #BlackHistoryMonth can be misleading or insufficient. I always struggle with how to both honor the significance of talking about, showcasing, and understanding Black history... while also feeling like a month isn't remotely adequate. The history of people should be taught always, woven into our collective history, not as separate or "other." And certainly not just one month out of twelve. But, even though it's flawed, let's have Black History Month serve as a reminder to be more inclusive every day, not just on identified months of the year. Let's talk about understanding history in our own communities, and explore local resources with our families (like https://lnkd.in/dqHRPPBf). 💡 How can you learn more about things you don't know? 💡 Where can you be more curious? 💡 What books, shows, films are you consuming? Celebrating Juneteenth: A Day of Freedom and Reflection ✊🏿 We honor and celebrate Juneteenth, a significant day in American history that marks the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom. Juneteenth is a day of joy, reflection, and education. It’s a time to celebrate the resilience, culture, and contributions of Black Americans, as well as a time to acknowledge the ongoing struggle for true equality and justice. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and the College Board might try to dictate how we learn Black history, but we're reclaiming the narrative! 📣 In a 2023 article by The Hechinger Report, Atnre Alleyne, CEO of TeenSHARP, highlights the importance of preserving and celebrating Black history in our education system. Despite attempts to whitewash our history, Black communities have always found ways to educate our youth, from underground teachings to creating our own educational initiatives. At TeenSHARP, we're empowering students with culturally relevant classes and engaging with Black authors to ensure they have access to diverse perspectives. Our students are leading initiatives to require schools to teach Black history and are earning their way into elite colleges, rooted in their rich history and ancestral legacy. Celebrating Juneteenth: A Journey of Freedom, Progress, and Empowerment Today, celebrate Juneteenth, a pivotal moment in American history when the last enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom on June 19, 1865. This day symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and justice. Juneteenth is a celebration of resilience, culture, and the remarkable progress the Black community has made over the years. There has been progress in civil rights and corporate America, the contributions and achievements of Black people continue to shape our society in major ways. However, our journey is far from over. There is still work to be done to ensure true equality and opportunity for all. One avenue that I consistently talk about because of the immense potential for economic empowerment is passive real estate investing in commercial multifamily properties. By investing in these assets, we not only diversify our portfolios but also create avenues for generational wealth and community development. This form of investing can be particularly transformative for the Black community and other groups, providing a path to financial independence. February marks the start of Black History Month in the US - an important time to remember the struggles and triumphs of African Americans throughout history. From abolitionists to civil rights activists, African Americans have been instrumental in making the US the diverse, vibrant country it is today. This month is an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of African Americans, and to remember the work still to do in the fight for racial justice. Over the next weeks, we will recognize some key figures and events in black history, as well as look at black history and current movements throughout the tech industry. Celebrating Black History Month can invite questions from children about racism and injustice, which can be challenging for educators and parents to navigate. But Black History Month is a perfect opportunity to lean into a child’s curiosity and teach them how to discuss their differences respectfully. When planning Black History Month activities, keep the following tips in mind. ▶️Teach children that the purpose of Black History Month is to remember and celebrate. Black History Month exists as a time we set aside to acknowledge what African Americans accomplished in the face of severe injustice and celebrate those achievements. To help introduce the concept, you may want to compare it to how we celebrate someone on their birthday, or explain that we’re learning about what happened before birth so we don’t forget how important it is. ▶️Black History Month activities can focus on both celebration and acknowledging injustice. It wasn’t easy for African Americans to accomplish all the things that children will learn about during Black History Month. Teachers and families can acknowledge the struggles and sacrifices and celebrate African Americans' great triumphs throughout history. This teaches children—particularly Black children—that Black history is about much more than slavery. ▶️Emphasize the significant role of Black Americans in the big picture of American history by introducing children to the various Black figures who built and contributed to the advancement of American society. In addition, remind children that Black history and culture are highly influential and essential parts of American history. ▶️Build quality connections with families in your program and share what the children are learning in the classroom by sending daily activity reports and monthly newsletters to families.
