The Truth About Career Development: It’s Not Just About Submitting Resumes... To all students and recent graduates: I want to share something crucial about the job search process. My team (Mary Margaret Harvey + Morganne Harrison) and I meet with countless students who express frustration about not hearing back from employers or having submitted several resumes without success. Whenever we hear this, our immediate question is, "What else have you tried, and who have you cultivated relationships with?" In the aftermath of the pandemic and in our increasingly digital world, there's a growing belief that we can achieve our goals on our own. But let me be clear—that couldn't be further from the truth. Success in today’s job market isn’t just about being qualified; it’s about forging authentic relationships and developing those soft skills and intangibles that set you apart. Our students are brilliant and talented, but so are the many others vying for the same opportunities. What will make you stand out? Your ability to build connections, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and show up in spaces where meaningful interactions can happen. This semester, I encourage you to take ownership of your career development journey. Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you—go out and create them. Join us for one of our workshops, engage in networking events, and start cultivating those critical relationships that will propel you forward. Do your part. Show up. Invest in yourself. The opportunities are there, but it’s up to you to seize them. Let’s make this semester count! #CareerDevelopment #StudentSuccess #Networking #SoftSkills #MarymountUniversity #ShowUp #InvestInYourself #CommunityBuilding

True Grit: The Commitment of Scholars Behind Bars (Part 1) What does a typical college student need for success? For most, it's things we often take for granted: Google – A world of information at your fingertips. Email – Direct access to faculty and classmates. Smartphone – Staying connected and accessing tools anytime, anywhere. Access to Faculty – Office hours and guidance outside of class. Career Fairs – Opportunities to network and find internships or jobs. Access to Transcripts – Whether from high school or previous colleges, easy access to your academic history is crucial. A Well-Resourced Library – Countless books, research materials, and digital access. Answers On Demand – The ability to ask questions and get answers almost instantly. These are things the average college student uses without a second thought. But for scholars behind bars, most of the time, these luxuries are not readily available. Yet, they successfully navigate their educational journey with minimal resources, sheer determination, and unwavering commitment. That is what I call True Grit. Stay tuned for more insights from my visit to Jessup Correctional Facility, where I witnessed firsthand the resilience and dedication of these scholars. Britany Gatewood, Ph.D. Anthony J. What an incredible turnout at Michigan Technological University's Michigan Day Career Fest! Hundreds of students had the chance to explore career opportunities with top companies from across the state, including 13 U.P. employers. As a region, the U.P is blessed with nearly 20,000 higher-ed students. According to Amy Berglund of InvestUP, for a rural region, this is “significant” and reflects why this is “a great opportunity to introduce students to the U.P. employers, and also the U.P. employers to the students.” With MTU enrollment surging to 7,430 and earning accolades for early career salaries, the Michigan Day Career Fest couldn’t come at a better time! This paired momentum is creating exciting opportunities for both students and U.P. employers. Is there much value in developing skills if you can’t then articulate them to others? The ability to write an effective CV should be a pretty basic outcome of education. One of the graduates I employed this summer is applying for full time roles at the start of their career. When they applied to work on my summer program I was shocked by their CV after 5 years in one of the UK’s top schools and 4 years at a top university. Their school would have been proud to list their 3 A* at A-level amongst their lists of successful outcomes, their university proud to add their 1st to their list of successful outcomes. Long lists of experiences, interests etc but with no mention of what they had gained or learned, and no way of understanding who they are and what they offer. I offered to go through their CV with them and help them work through their current fog of knowing what their next steps should be. We had to start at step 1. There has been a lot of progress in career education but there remains a long way to go. Career education needs to start early, it needs to be ongoing, and it needs to be integrated with all areas of school life so students learn how to reflect deeply on their holistic learning, holistic growth and holistic impact so they can clearly communicate their ongoing development to others.

Excited to share some highlights from a recent student orientation event with Cali Wilder! 🌟 This summer, I had the pleasure of engaging with dozens of parents, family members, and new students at various new student resource fairs while representing Temple University Career Center. Here are some common questions I encountered and their answers: 🔍 "Do students come to you in their senior year for help in their job search?" 💡 Answer: The Career Center is here for all matriculated students and recent alumni, not just seniors. It's best for students to connect with us early on, ideally in their first year, to navigate the career development landscape and refine essential skills well in advance. 🔍 "But I already have an Advisor. How is this different than Academic Advising?" 💡 Answer: While Advisors focus on your academic path, ensuring you graduate with your chosen major/minor, the University Career Center helps you transition from a student to a professional. We assist in developing your personal brand, identifying post-graduation goals, and enhancing your application materials to prepare you for success. 🦉 Don't know how to make an appointment? Matriculated students and alumni within 5 years of their graduation date can schedule an appointments for career coaching, headshots, and find other resources in Handshake

Assistant Professor of Commerce | UGC NET Certified | Academician | Department of Marketing Management- DGVC
Serving as the department faculty placement coordinator for two years has given me valuable insights. The ultimate goal of education is not just gaining knowledge but also developing skills and enhancing employability. As educators, we often have varied perspectives on this subject. What I want to highlight is the transformation I witness in my students when they start seeking employment opportunities during their final year. Some students are proactive, aware of the industry's demands, and work towards it from the beginning. Others immerse themselves in college life and only focus on employment in their final year. Then there are the smart ones who manage to balance both academics and career planning. Which category did you fall into during your college days? #placements #college #carrier
