The Zemplén 723 footbridge, also known as the "Bridge of National Unity", is an outstanding pedestrian catenary bridge located in Sátoraljaújhely, Hungary. Spanning 723 metres, it holds the Guinness World Record for the longest span in its category. Opened to the public in June 2024, the bridge features six main steel cables that follow a parabolic arc with a 27-metre sag, stiffened by a wind cable system. The deck includes glass sections for enhanced viewing experiences. Peter Gondar, Senior Structural Engineer at MSC Engineers & Consultants, states that "This was one of the most challenging projects in the history of our firm thanks to the numerous engineering problems that the design of such a unique bridge hides. The entire design process was highly driven by the calculations, meaning that not only the general structural safety but also the geometry, the buildability and the final serviceability of the bridge depended on the accuracy of the cable forces." I have recently completed an intensive webinar on the topic - 'Materials and Structures Under Extreme Loading Conditions'. This in-depth program highlighted the critical role of advanced materials and structural design in enhancing the resilience and safety of the buildings. A key focus was on the importance of shear walls, which are essential for providing lateral stability and minimizing deformation during seismic events. Additionally, we explored cutting-edge earthquake-resistant technologies that can significantly mitigate damage and protect lives during disasters. This experience has deepened my understanding of Structural Engineering, and has reinforced the need for innovative solutions to ensure the durability and safety of mega structures in the extreme loading conditions (especially lateral loads). #structuralengineering #civilengineering

🔍 Understanding Soft Story Irregularity in Structural Design In the world of structural engineering, "soft story" irregularity is a critical concept that can have significant implications for building safety, especially in seismic zones. This occurs when different lateral systems with varying stiffness levels are stacked vertically within a structure. Take, for example, a shear wall (which has very high stiffness) placed over a moment frame (which has much lower stiffness). The difference in lateral stiffness can cause the frame to experience different magnitudes of lateral deflection, potentially leading to inelastic deformation in the moment frame columns. This is precisely why soft stories are prohibited in certain seismic design categories under ASCE 7!
