Andreu World, a Valencian company that specializes in contemporary furniture design has launched a series of solidarity initiatives to support individuals and communities affected by the impact of the DANA storm in the Valencia region. As part of these efforts, the company has made a significant contribution by donating 3,000 chairs, launching a GoFundMe fundraising campaign, and developing a solidarity piece in collaboration with designer Patricia Urquiola. As 2024 draws to a close, we’re excited to announce Band of Builders (BoB) as our official charity partner for the upcoming year. BoB is an award-winning national construction charity that completes practical projects to support members of the UK construction industry who are battling illness or injury. For each project, volunteers come together to help their fellow tradespeople through renovations or repairs that make a real difference to their lives. Speaking together, Structure Tone London’s joint Managing Directors Justin Fahy and Matt Blowers said: “At Structure Tone, we’ve been proud to partner with BoB for their Big Brew events over the past year, bringing their initiatives to our sites and events to spotlight mental health challenges in construction and guide our teams to available support. “We are committed to raising funds that enable impactful projects, where volunteers unite to help peers through meaningful renovations and repairs.” In a statement, BoB’s CEO Gavin Crane said: “It’s always very humbling when an organisation chooses Band of Builders as their chosen charity – and we are delighted that Structure Tone has selected us for 2025. “We look forward to building a genuine partnership with Structure Tone.”

This is what happens when partnerships deliver for the community: Together with our subcontractors, we delivered a pro bono refurbishment for Stripey Stork. Here’s Nicola Dawes’ thoughts on the impact for her team:   “Charities are used to compromising, to making do. To have a partner like Overbury genuinely listen to us, understand our mission, and go above and beyond has been transformative. This project has not only upgraded our facilities but has given us the tools to scale up and help even more families in need. It’s a powerful reminder of what’s possible when businesses and charities unite for good. We are so grateful to all the companies involved and can’t wait to show them what we can do with the space.”   The pro bono refurbishment of Stripey Stork’s newly acquired warehouse has created a fully functional and inclusive space to support their vital work. Another inspiring case study from #AJRetroFitLive This time the rejuvenation of the Rylands building (former Debenhams) in the centre of Manchester, also focussing on the reuse of both the building and materials. Kiru Balson described the work of the Max Fordham LLP team who worked towards the challenge of achieving 30% reuse during the refurbishment set as a planning condition, asking themselves the questions: 1. What can we realistically reuse in the same scheme. 2. What about the stuff we don’t need? The success stories included: - 2 generators donated to charity - 600 LED lights recovered and sent for remanufacturing - 9 escalators sent to a repair company that needed the spare parts Great work to all involved 👏🏻 and good luck with the next steps! #circulareconomy #circularconstruction #reuse #remanufacturing #repair

With schools just about to break up (sorry Scotland - I know you’re already deep in it), soon clients and designers alike will be one theme park visit away from voluntary commitment. Time for some fun. I have two types in mind :-) 1. Next week I’ll be delving into the Seven Deadly Sins of Interior Design Practice. Interestingly designers and clients are equally sinning and sinned against. I have nothing redeeming to say about the next door neighbour.  Here’s my list: Sins of the Designer: - Timidity - Pride  - Superficiality Sins of the Client:  - Indecision (check out my video about this on YouTube) - Exploitation - Presumption And number seven: a sin of the next door neighbour/best friend/relative:  - Interference (scowly face) More to follow... 2.
