Today, the American Wildlife Conservation Partners (AWCP) – comprised of the nation’s top 52 sporting-conservation organizations that represent America’s hunter-conservationists, professional wildlife and natural resource managers, outdoor recreation users, conservation educators, and wildlife scientists – released Wildlife for the 21st Century, Volume VII (W-21). This comprehensive publication focuses on solutions to conserve wildlife and their habitats across the nation, bolstering public access, and protecting our outdoor traditions. Every four years since AWCP was first convened in 2000, the partners have put forth their collective priorities in Wildlife for the 21st Century, which serves as the roadmap for AWCP’s vision for wildlife and sportsmen and sportswomen. “Our partners that make up AWCP should be proud of their ability to coalesce around a shared set of policy priorities which, should they be adopted, would produce real and meaningful benefits for hunters, habitat, and wildlife across the United States. It is a comprehensive suite of recommendations that can serve as a blueprint for conservation and hunting policy in the future,” said John Devney, AWCP Vice-Chair and Chief Policy Officer for Delta Waterfowl. We joined 60+ conservation groups across North America earlier this week in filing letters to urge the USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to immediately prohibit the use of snowmobiles or other vehicles to run down, injure, or kill wildlife on all federal lands they manage. 🚫🐺 To the average citizen, running over coyotes and wolves with a snowmobile sounds inhumane, barbaric, and just plain cruel. But unfortunately, this practice is legal in Wyoming and Idaho (wolves and coyotes), and Montana (just coyotes), where wildlife policy is stacked against wild carnivores. You can learn more about "whacking" in our recent reel about this egregious practice. Both #Wyoming and #Montana had the opportunity to prohibit this practice in 2019 and FAILED to do so. Allowing this practice to continue has emboldened individuals like Cody Roberts to commit his heinous act of running over a yearling wolf in Wyoming before further torturing her in a bar and finally killing her. 💔 Unfortunately, even if Northern Rocky Mountain wolves eventually receive the federal Endangered Species Act protections they deserve (which is essential to prevent decades of conservation work from being undone, and why we’re suing U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), it would still be legal to run over coyotes with snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles. An update from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) on the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge: "The Southeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering a proposal that would expand the boundary of the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, adding approximately 22,000 acres adjacent to the existing refuge. The Service is seeking public input on the proposal. If adopted, the proposed minor boundary expansion would enable the Service to work with willing landowners to explore voluntary conservation actions, including potential acquisition, that would further protect the refuge’s globally significant freshwater wetland system and wildlife habitat. The proposed expansion includes lands currently held by Twin Pines Minerals, LLC as well as a one-mile fuel reduction zone adjacent to the refuge." A public comment period is now open until November 18 with a public meeting in Folkston on October 29. Be on the lookout for upcoming information from the Georgia Conservancy. They provide vital spaces for wildlife, where special habitats can flourish. There is a general misconception that all the best nature conservation sites are nationally designated and legally protected. This is not the case. While Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are crucially important, they represent only a small sample of our most important habitats and species. Many places are not designated as SSSIs, and have no legal protection despite being of equal or greater value for wildlife. So instead many of these places are designated locally as Local Wildlife Sites. forward conservation thinking is long overdue

If you are new to recreational scalloping in Florida, here are a few tips to know before you go: 1️⃣ SUPPLIES: swim mask, snorkel, small mesh bag, cooler with ice, red divers-down flag (for boat) & SCALLOP SORTER. 2️⃣ SAFETY: Always display your red diver-down flag at the highest point from your vessel to let other boaters know you are in the water. 3️⃣ COLLECTING: look around the bottom of seagrass beds and collect the scallops by hand. Use your SCALLOP SORTER TOOL to measure the size of each scallop and return the ones that are smaller than the cut-out back to the seagrass area. Place the scallops you are keeping on ice while traveling back to the shore when you are finished. 🌟Refer to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission website for bag limits (varies through the region and depending on the dates). 4️⃣ CLEANING: Move your boat away from scalloping areas while cleaning and make sure all the shells & scallop guts are discarded away from the shoreline and in deep water. 5️⃣ LEGAL: Know Florida's laws around scalloping before you go. 🌟Refer to Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission for the most updated laws here: https://bit.ly/3VJGFGg
