There are several possible reasons for the investment, but we're placing our chips on one in particular. The Sony Pictures Entertainment acquisition of Austin, Texas-based Alamo Drafthouse Cinema and its 35 U.S. locations counts among the few real industry surprises. Days later, the industry is still surprised: There must be a strategy, but damned if anyone can be sure what it is. The Alamo reputation lies in its niche exhibition experience that combines studio programming with distinctive specialized offerings, all packaged with dining and drinking. Its theaters gross somewhere between $125 million-$150 million annually in box office. (Concessions revenue is unknown.) That represents a little more than 1.5 percent of total U.S./Canada gross, which makes it the #7 exhibitor.

💡💡 Welcome back to The Event Edge, a series exploring the #eventindustry hottest topics for event producers. This week's topic is the #TechCrew 💡💡 If you know me, which I hope most of you reading this do, you know that I live and breathe for the #technical side of event production. It is what gets me most excited about the industry and where I feel most comfortable. If terms like: Technical Director, A1 and A2, GFX Switcher, and Camera Operator mean as much to you as they do to me, then this week's topic will be right up your alley. If the event industry could be compared to the human body, the tech crew would be the heartbeat. From floorplans to 3D renders, from pull sheets to trucks loaded with gear and sent off the venues, the crew and everyone behind the scenes is the backbone of the shows we know and love. On the front end, we see the content on screen, the amazing lighting designs in the room and the crystal clear audio setups -- but without the crew's work, none of it would be possible. The crew arrives well before anyone else and most cases stays way past when guests and producers leave, ensuring the show is unloaded, setup, operated, torn-down and packed up at the highest quality of standards. Most often, the crew is never thanked on stage, in show guides or in award speeches. I can tell you firsthand that this needs to change. We need to show much more love to the crews who deliver our shows at the highest level. The crew is the engine that keeps the industry chugging along, and for that we owe them a huge round of applause. I challenge you to tag your favourite AV crew member in the comments ⤵ and let's show them the love that they truly deserve. I'll tag some of my favourites in the comments below as well. Thanks for reading and see you next week! #AV #TechCrew #CanadianEvents #TorontoEvents #EventTech #EventProduction #EventManager #EventIndustry #EventProfs #CorporateEvents #AVGear

With CEDIA behind us and some proper sleep I have finally had a moment to reflect on the show. I am so excited that we finally could show the Heimdall projector that has been in the works for so long. Thomas Andersen brought up the idea of building the projector in this very specific way with the RGB engine being one important part of the puzzle. The Heimdall is one of the best images I've ever seen, no matter which projector you compare it to (except Barco Lightsteering). Based on the feedback, I think this goes for many who visited the theatre as well. I have not been this excited to bring a projector to market in a long time. Did I mention that it is quiet and can be inside a room while still providing 6,000 Lumens at Rec2020!!! See link at the bottom Projector trend at the show Sony, JVC, Epson, Christie and Digital Projection were all on the show floor this year, all of them with new models looking to reach higher end theaters. Together we will all help overcome our biggest problem, end-user awareness of what a luxury theatre experience can actually be like. If we help overcome this, there is plenty of room for all of us to grow our businesses substantially. LED portfolio expansion I didn't think we could match the feedback we got last year on our Bifrost LED wall 0.9. But this year was just as great, and the NT Vali 1.2 163" took it to another level due to its performance at a new price level, this really created some amazing booth traffic. You know something is right when you see integrators spending their time repeatedly coming back with their integrator friends to show them what they just saw. Another great indicator is when you get a showroom order within hours of the show opening. See link below. While our products are exciting and great, what makes the biggest difference is our team. I could not ask for any better team members than Lacey Swegan, Andy Jones, David Robledo, Quan Zhao, Bart Devos, Chris Deutsch, Jeff Marks, Mehmet Deniz Kaya. I'm reminded each year how many amazing industry partners, rep firms and personal friends we have. I greatly value this, this post is long enough and can live without a massive list of tags, you know who you are! Thank you!!! Struggling Movie Exhibitors Beg Studios For More Movies - and Not Just Blockbusters: Movie exhibitors still face "serious risks," the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday: Attendance was on the decline even before the pandemic shuttered theaters, thanks to changing consumer habits and competition for people's time and money from other entertainment options. The industry has demonstrated an over-reliance on Imax-friendly studio action tent poles, when theater chains need a deep and diverse roster of movies in order to thrive... It remains to be seen whether the global box office will ever get back to the $40 billion-plus days of 2019 and earlier years. A clearer picture will emerge in 2025 when the writers' and actors' strikes are further in the past. But overall, there's a strong case that moviegoing has proved to be relatively sturdy despite persistent difficulties. Which brings us to this year's CinemaCon convention, where multiplex operators heard from Hollywood studios teasing upcoming blockbusters like Joker: Folie à Deux, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Transformers One, and Deadpool & Wolverine. Exhibitors pleaded with the major studios to release more films of varying budgets on the big screen, while studios made the case that their upcoming slates are robust enough to keep them in business... Box office revenue in the U.S. and Canada is expected to total about $8.5 billion, which is down from $9 billion in 2023 and a far cry from the pre-pandemic yearly tallies that nearly reached $12 billion... Though a fuller release schedule is expected for 2025, talk of budget cuts, greater industry consolidation and corporate mergers has forced exhibitors to prepare for the possibility of a near future with fewer studios making fewer movies.... As the domestic film business has been thrown into turmoil in recent years, Japanese cinema and faith-based content have been two of movie theaters' saving graces. Industry leaders kicked off CinemaCon on Tuesday by singing the praises of Sony-owned anime distributor Crunchyroll's hits — including the latest "Demon Slayer" installment. Mitchel Berger, senior vice president of global commerce at Crunchyroll, said Tuesday that the global anime business generated $14 billion a decade ago and is projected to generate $37 billion next year. "Anime is red hot right now," Berger said. "Fans have known about it for years, but now everyone else is catching up and recognizing that it's a cultural, economic force to be reckoned with.... " Another type of product buoying the exhibition industry right now is faith-based programming, shepherded in large part by "Sound of Freedom" distributor Angel Studios... Theater owners urged studio executives at CinemaCon to put more films in theaters — and not just big-budget tent poles timed for summer movie season and holiday weekends... "Whenever we have a [blockbuster] film — whether it be 'Barbie' or 'Super Mario' ... records are set," added Bill Barstow, co-founder of ACX Cinemas
