We’re delighted to be a sponsor of this report, along with ADAM Architecture. Led by the University of Dundee and Dr Husam AlWaer B.Arch, MRTPI, Ph.D, BREEAM AP, AoU, UDG, this collectively produced report provides timely guidance on how to deliver 20 Minute Neighbourhoods to all professionals within the built environment. Our employees Hal Mellen and Alessandro Venerandi noted 4 main takeaways from the launch event at the V&A in Dundee on the 19th April: 🏢 Densities ranging from 50 to 90 people per hectare (depending on connectivity) are necessary to establish the critical mass needed to support facilities within a 10-minute walking radius. This equates to roughly 25-45 dwellings per hectare. An achievable target but higher than the typical delivery of house across the country. ✨ It’s not just about quantity, quality is important too. There is no benefit in living close to doctors’ surgery if you can’t get an appointment. For this reason, qualitative assessments must be tied to quantitative ones in the delivery of 20 minute neighbourhoods. 🏘️ Achieving 20 minute neighbourhoods in rural locations can be difficult since there won’t be the critical mass of people needed to support certain facilities. In these instances, villages and hamlets should be grouped and connected by high quality active travel infrastructure and public transport links. ↩️ Feedback loops are essential for delivery. Unless a public body acts as an arbiter for the policy and tracks progress towards its achievement over time, walkable places that support sustainable lifestyles won’t be realised.
ADAM Architecture are proud to support an insightful new report on 20-minute neighbourhoods, published by Dr Husam AlWaer, Reader in Sustainable Urban Design at the University of Dundee, titled 'Understanding the 20-Minute Neighbourhood: Making opportunities for people to live well locally'. Delighted to support alongside Urban Design Group, Sustrans, Corstorphine & Wright, Hilson Moran, Proctor & Matthews Architects and SURF - Scotland's Regeneration Forum. It is intended for anyone who wants to improve their understanding of the meaning and implications of 20-minute neighbourhoods. The guide takes readers through key considerations for a 20-minute neighbourhood strategy. This includes the following ideas: • Understanding and articulating the desired outcomes that politicians, planners, architects, urban designers and other decision makers want to achieve. • Correctly assembling the means – mechanisms, levers, triggers and causal factors – necessary to produce a 20-minute neighbourhood. • Defining changes and behaviours for successful 20-minute neighbourhoods, noting the concept's diverse interpretations and priorities, tailored to specific contexts and circumstances. Please find further insights in the report accessible through the link provided below. https://lnkd.in/evQ2_rTA

Full Professor and Director of Sustainability and Environmental Studies at Augustana University (SD) 2024 Bush Fellow (Personal account; opinions are my own and not my employer's)
An interesting — and so simple — idea in urban planning and architecture: attend to what real people need. Sometimes I have invited my graduate students to walk through our city with me and to simply imagine themselves as different people. What is it like to cross a street if you even imagine yourself in a wheelchair? What is it like to cross a park if you imagine yourself to be frail? Etc. Imagination is just the beginning, of course. But the upshot is this: take the perspectives of others seriously, and you wind up changing what you build. https://lnkd.in/gQ6_kAvZ

Aggressive forms of “hostile architecture” can be highly problematic contributing to social exclusion and enclaves. Marcus Foth, Nick Kelly and Skye Doherty argue that urban designers need to broaden their understanding of creativity if they are to design liveable, sustainable and equitable places to live and work. #urbandesign #creativedesignprudence #hostilearchitecture https://lnkd.in/gxSkkj4V

New Opportunities In Multifamily Housing Did you know that the density of California cities is increasing? What will this increased density look like? We think there could be different approaches to these developments. If there is an existing single family home on a lot, there could be a duplex added to the backyard, or if the lot is empty, we could develop something as large as a fourplex. But what would we really like the future to look like? How would we want to shape our lives? Two key observations: 👀👇 First, let's talk about Julie Power, truly a brilliant urban storyteller with a unique talent for unearthing tales that would otherwise tend to fall between the cracks ❤️ Second - how exciting is the shortlist for this year's NSW Architecture Awards! Innovation like this so important when we desperately need fresh thinking for housing 🏠 #architecture #housingcrisis #urbanplanning
