🌲🏫 Exciting news from France's Gironde department! 🇫🇷 In 2022, authorities unveiled a remarkable project: a secondary school constructed with locally sourced pine trees amidst the breathtaking forests covering half the area. 🌳 Situated between Bordeaux and famed vineyards, the Pian-Médoc school reflects a commitment to practical sustainability, utilizing nearby wood resources while preserving the natural landscape. 🏞️ 🌿 This initiative aligns with the BASAJAUN project, a Europe-wide endeavor promoting the versatility and sustainability of wood. 💡 Culminating after four and a half years, BASAJAUN underscores the transformative potential of timber resources in construction and forestry practices. 🌟Adjacent to the school, a wooden apartment complex, crafted from non-local timber, exemplifies innovative design and sustainability principles. ♻️ The project is a beacon of innovation, showcasing advancements in construction materials and circularity. 🌍 Let's celebrate initiatives like the Pian-Médoc school and BASAJAUN, illuminating the path towards a greener, more sustainable future! 🌱 #Sustainability #Construction #Forestry #ECEurope

The patented design of our BioPanel living wall was developed by our founders back in 2008, our team set out to create a green wall system that would be the most flexible, resilient and low water use of any fully comprehensive living wall system anywhere in the world. We trialed various growing media (including soil) before selecting Grodan®. Grodan® is: 🌿Dimensionally stable – meaning it will not winnow or degrade 🌿Chemically inert – and so won’t lock on to nutrients over time 🌿 Supremely Water Efficient – holds up to 80% water content before draining 🌿 Non combustible - Grodan is non-combustible and does not pose a fire hazard. 🌿 & Sustainable - Grodan is a stone-wool made up of volcanic rock with a European Eco-label for sustainability. Precision growing in thin substrates requires a growing medium that is robust, efficient and predictable. Using Grodan® to cultivate plants overcomes the shortcomings of vertically stacked soil while achieving healthier and longer-lasting plants and resilient healthy root zones. AND it requires fewer inputs to do so in terms of water and nutrients. 💚If you would like to find our more about our living walls join our upcoming webinars: Green Walls 101: 24th April https://lnkd.in/efFVX5wj Designing Living Cladding: 8th May https://lnkd.in/eyV_jH89 Pictured: Fenchurch Street, installed in 2014, photo 2023 #greeninfrastructure #livingwalls #hydroponics

It was great to attend the launch of the Landscape Institutes new report on Landscape and Carbon. A lot to take away and contemplate, but the headline is the time is now and our offer to the built environment unique in our capacity to design and create places that can sequester and store carbon. Tree planting and soil carbon storage important. Designing landscapes with 70% Soft / 30% Hard should always be the aim, reuse of existing site materials and choosing the lowest carbon products also all key. Finally testing how much carbon our designs will use in production, installation and use also something we should all be doing on every project that will sharpen our minds and make our design decision making better for low carbon landscapes now and into the future. https://lnkd.in/g3GAjbRX #landscapearchitecture #lowcarbon

𝘏𝘦𝘸𝘐𝘕𝘚𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘛 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴: Effectively Using Oak In Construction Not only is Oak one of the world’s most beautiful and versatile materials, it is also completely sustainable. The sustainability of oak can be evaluated from various perspectives, each reinforcing its status as an environmentally responsible choice. With this in mind, you can specify oak with confidence, knowing that it is among the most sustainable construction materials available today. 𝐅𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐲 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 European Oak is a prominent tree across Europe, supported by sustainable forestry schemes like PEFC and FSC. Its historical significance in France dates back as far as 1669 when King Louis XIV restructured forests to provide material to build a powerful navy. Although naval demands decreased after Napoleon's defeat, France now maintains 34,000 square miles of oak forests and harvests about 1,000,000 cubic meters annually. 𝐒𝐚𝐰𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 Throughout the milling and processing journey, any waste can be processed into wood chips or pellets for biomass energy production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. 𝐃𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 The durability of this material is another reason why it is such a sustainable choice. When considering that most oak structures will remain fully functional for more than 3-400 years, the typical growth span of an Oak (80 to 100 years) is relatively short. 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧 𝐒𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Timber has exceptional thermal properties, providing excellent insulation and reducing the need for excessive energy consumption in buildings. Wood has a low thermal conductivity, meaning it effectively retains heat in cold climates and keeps interiors cooler in hot climates. 𝐂𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐫 𝐄𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐲 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐮𝐬𝐞 Timber is well-suited for the principles of the circular economy. It can be easily disassembled, reused, and repurposed in various applications. Reclaimed timber retains its strength and aesthetic qualities, often adding a unique character to the built environment. Start your journey with Hewins today, and discover how Oak can transform your next project. #EuropeanOak #HewINSIGHT #Architects #TimberMarketing #Construction #OakSpecialists #OakConstruction #OakBeams #TimberSupply #Joinery
