More evidence that there is a persistent gap between the desire by institutions and faculty to support student success and their awareness of the content, tools, and resources available to them. Intentional strategies that drive adoption and use are key to teaching and learning effectiveness. Want to know what this looks like for your content and customers? Let's start the conversation.
"Despite their prevalence, one of the major takeaways from this project is that textbook affordability programs may not be easily findable for library stakeholders. Even at the ARL libraries that have invested a considerable amount of financial and other resources into creating and maintaining textbook affordability programs, most programs did not have a proportional level of visibility on the library website." Discovery and awareness remain major barriers to the adoption of Open Education Resources (OERs) at ARL Libraries. We continue this struggle between engagement with new technology and the argument of losing basic skills, handwriting, reading real books, and being creative with our hands. All are worthy pursuits and should not be considered 'old technology'. I believe we are responsible as educators for teaching young people how to use new technology to enhance and benefit our existence, but not to subsume our whole existence. The argument of mobile phones being distracting may well be true, but we need to teach children how to develop focus and the difference between appropriate and inappropriate behaviour because this technology will be available, and when will they be allowed to counter that distraction if we don't teach it? This technology is here to stay. It has some benefits, but it has some challenges. I fear that the governmental banning conversation will have unintended consequences that will be hard to reverse. We would not consider banning computers from the classroom, so why are we considering this as the solution to a computer in your pocket? How do we square this circle: access to new technology and innovation while teaching young minds the discipline of concentration? https://lnkd.in/eywpwEfb #edtech #educationpolicy #schoolleadership #headteacher #principal #educationreform

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐬𝐨 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞! Passive screen time doesn’t promote development and is now clearly linked to the vocabulary gap. (https://t.ly/jWKAx) BUT, just as some toys promote cognitive, social and linguistic development better than others: some apps do too. No one is promoting getting rid of toys from early childhood - perhaps just choosing better ones. 📚💻 Don't lump digital books with screen time! 🚫📺 Parents and educators often wonder if screen time should be something to avoid or limit, as children begin to use digital devices more and more in their everyday life. In a recent article, researchers have suggested that if it involves reading, then screen time is ok. Unlike passive screen use, reading e-books is an active engagement that boosts critical thinking and comprehension skills. Studies show it's more like traditional reading than mindless scrolling. This! ⬇️ Screen time *can* be an unhealthy metric. Podcast, audibles, digital books are indeed ‘lumped in’. My son loves an audio book 📕 and I love the conversations that follow. 📲 What’s app falls under social media - sometimes I check my screen time in shock, only to realise that I’d been on a call with my mum & sisters, setting the world to right - connected through technology when we couldn’t be together geographically. The screen time conversation in nuanced. Use this post as a reminder to check in, what are you really up to? Is your screen time healthy, happy, purposeful? If not, what can you cut? What can you replace?
