In road safety, understanding and influencing human behaviour is key. I'm thrilled to share that I have successfully completed the Behavioural Change course by Road Safety GB (RSGB), a transformative experience that equipped me with vital techniques to enhance road safety.
My assignment focused on the intervention, called "Safe Steps for Older Pedestrians." This initiative aims to enhance safety for older adults (65+ of age) who face higher risks due to mobility challenges, slower reaction times, and less awareness of traffic dangers. By incorporating the COM-B model (Capability, Opportunity, Motivation - Behaviour), targeted strategies were presented to improve their safety, and prevent injuries and fatalities, promoting independence and mobility, and ensuring equitable access to public spaces, making communities safer and more inclusive for all residents.
Through this course, I gained insights into road user behaviour, explored various behavioural models like COM-B, and learned change techniques, such as nudge theory and persuasive communication, to develop effective interventions in Road Safety. Considering that 95% of road traffic collisions result from human error, these skills are crucial for creating safer roads.
I’m excited to apply this knowledge to develop impactful road safety initiatives. A heartfelt thank you to Ian Edwards, Will Cubbin, Safer Essex Roads Partnership (SERP), and Road Safety GB for this incredible opportunity.
