Today marked a significant milestone in UNSW’s journey towards micro-treaty to be negotiated in respectful partnership with our Indigenous communities.
The inaugural meeting of our Indigenous Representative Council for the UNSW Micro-Treaty took place today, setting the foundation for a new era of collaboration and self-determination.
The Micro-Treaty initiative, born out of our commitment to the Uluru Statement from the Heart, is more than just a symbolic gesture. It is a concrete step towards ensuring that the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, staff, alumni, and community members are not only heard but impact the decisions that shape our institution. As we reflected on the Voice referendum and the challenges that followed, our resolve to continue walking together towards a better future only strengthened.
Under the leadership of Professor Leanne Holt, our inaugural Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous and Professor Megan Davis, our work, and the Micro-Treaty process itself, embodies the principles of Voice, Treaty and Truth. It empowers our Indigenous communities by creating a space for genuine dialogue, negotiation, and agreement – ensuring that Indigenous priorities and aspirations are met with action.
This council, comprising representatives from diverse Indigenous communities connected to UNSW, will guide the discussions that will define our commitments. These Dialogues, rooted in mutual respect and cultural recognition, will shape how we, as a university, engage with and celebrate our Indigenous communities, now and in the future.
As we look ahead, the UNSW Micro-Treaty will stand as a pioneering model of how institutions can embrace Indigenous self-determination and contribute to societal impact through measurable commitments that will resonate for generations to come.
We are excited to continue this journey with our Indigenous Representative Council.
