Have you ever bought something because of social media? 43% of people regularly use TikTok’s parent company’s platforms. And each user is affected by the adverts of varying subtlety they provide. For me, this figure really puts into perspective the potential congress’ ban on TikTok could have on #ecommerce. If it goes through and the platform isn’t sold, it’s not only thousands of influencers that will be out of a revenue stream – where will all the businesses that advertise on there go? #retail #TikTok #ByteDance #ChatGPT #GenerativeAI #eCommerce #BCGX

I’ve been keeping my eye on an interesting trend lately: more and more companies are launching platforms to help consumers navigate the plethora of retail brands available to them. Two categories of players are emerging here: - Machine-centric platforms, like Deft and #Google's latest generative AI features, use pre-established taxonomies and AI to surface the right brands to the right consumers. - Human-centric platforms, like ShopMy, Collective Voice, formerly ShopStyle Collective, and Klarna Creator Shops, lean into manual curation by allowing brands to partner with content creators and other brands. Neither of these concepts is new when you look at them in isolation: we’ve had search engines for a while now, and creators have been a big thing in eCommerce for a very long time now. What’s changing is that the financial opportunities are finally big enough to give rise to a whole new category of features and platforms that are specifically focused on brand discovery. On the consumer side, there’s clearly increasing demand for ways to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of our shopping sprees. It’s still early to tell, but there might be an interesting transformation on the horizon where the lines between brand, creator, curator, and consumer are forever blurred, which would mean not just new products, but a whole new layer in the cultural and economic fabric of digital commerce.
