Public art isn't just a pretty addition to public spaces, it can also serve a practical purpose. Incorporating painted floors and walls can guide people through public areas, making it easier for all pedestrian and mixed transportation traffic to navigate. By combining colour and imagery with good signage, users and space owners can both benefit. Shopping malls, for example, can use colourful imagery to help guide visitors around their venues more effectively. Let's highlight transportation routes and public areas with more public art! I recently read about the Museum of Emotions, a groundbreaking competition organized by the World Architecture Community. It provides a unique platform for architects, academics, and students worldwide to collaborate, share ideas, and push the boundaries of architectural expression globally. Theme for its 3rd (2023) edition- Using architecture as a tool to bring out different emotions. They are asked to design a museum that includes two separate exhibition halls that bring out contrasting emotions – one inducing negative emotions, and the other inducing positive emotions. Here are my key takeaways from each winner in its 3rd (2023) edition - 1st Prize: "Memorial of the Tree" by South China University of Technology - "Memorial of the Tree" intricately explores life and death through a strategically positioned skylight, visually connecting two worlds. - The design's impact is highlighted by the strong influence of visual storytelling in architectural innovation. - Beyond showcasing the creators' innovative spirit, it also serves as a reminder of the emotional depth architecture can evoke. 2nd Prize: "Living Things" from Chile - "Living Things" explores nature's emotional impact, contrasting a bleak landscape with a lively rainforest. - Going beyond aesthetics, this design demonstrates the potential of light and spatial dynamics in architecture. - The interplay of light and space not only shapes the environment but also tells a compelling story that deeply connects emotionally with those who experience it. 3rd Prize: "The Inverse" from Malaysia - "The Inverse" takes an experimental approach to scale, urging visitors to confront their smallness in a vast space. - The intentional play with scale encourages one to reflect on the significance of spatial perception. - This design invites individuals not just to observe but actively engage, offering a thought-provoking and immersive architectural experience. The common thread among the Museum of Emotions' 2023 winners lies in their ability to transcend architectural boundaries by using innovative design elements and proving just how impactful architectural elements are when it comes to evoking strong human emotions. These designs inspire us, people of the residential realty sector, to see architecture beyond physical structures but as a canvas of imagination. Professor William Edward Saul, my PhD thesis advisor in Wisconsin, Madison, did research on this problem with Professor Douglas Futch of U of I, Urbana-Champaign. in the 1980's. This is on the Camp Randall Stadium vibrations created when they played the song : When you say Bud ", about Budweiser Beer from Anheuser Busch. The solutions included stiffness and damping Xi increases. The solution of Mx" + Cx' × Kx = F(t) is made by Duhamel's Integral. Solutions are in our paper, Saul, W.E, Jayachandran, P., and Peyrot. A.H., Response of N-Degree Tall buildings to Stochastic Winds , Trans.ASCE, May 1976. The Damping C can be rewritten as 2.0 Xi w, where, Xi is the damping ratio and w = sqrt(k/m). The natural frequency and T is the Period, which is 2 Pi / w. Stiffness and Damping would bring down the acceleration. I don’t know the reason, but this is one of the videos I enjoyed making the most: “FUTURE”. This series, entirely crafted by artificial intelligence using just a mobile phone, invites us to explore both dystopian and optimistic visions of the future in one-minute capsules. In the third episode, titled “Abandoned,” it addresses the issue of recent architectural works that, regardless of their original purpose, quickly fall into disuse. The episode highlights the general trend of not considering a second life for buildings, leading to the creation of contemporary ruins. The narrative delves into the idea that these structures, not conceived with a long-term vision, become silent witnesses to irresponsible political and architectonical decisions. It goes beyond structures designed for world expos, cultural cityscapes, and Olympic pavilions, encompassing a wide range of projects. The storyline encourages reflection on the importance of integrating sustainability and adaptability into contemporary architectural design, emphasizing the need to rethink the approach to construction to avoid the proliferation of modern ruins.

However, an interesting engineering phenomenon comes into play during packed concerts—the balcony visibly bounces due to 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲. This effect, while fascinating, highlights a critical aspect of structural engineering: the importance of managing 𝙙𝙮𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙘 𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙙𝙨 to ensure safety. 🔑 Resonance occurs when the natural frequency of a structure aligns with the frequency of external forces, such as synchronized movements of an audience during a concert. This can potentially amplify vibrations and lead to structural concerns. 🔍 It’s important to note that structures, including balconies like those at the Fox Theatre, are designed to move to some extent. This flexibility is crucial because while a structure that is too stiff might resist everyday stresses and forces, it could fail catastrophically under unusual or extreme conditions. The designed flexibility helps absorb and dissipate energy, which is especially important in dynamic environments with variable loads such as crowds, wind, or seismic activities. This characteristic allows structures to withstand such forces without significant damage. 👀 However, excessive visible movement, like that observed in the Fox Theatre's balcony, can indicate that the dynamic loads are approaching or exceeding the design limits, highlighting the need for careful monitoring, regular maintenance, and potentially retrofitting to enhance resilience. This balance between flexibility and stiffness is key to ensuring both the longevity and safety of structures. 🏛️ As we continue to enjoy historic venues like the Fox Theatre, it's crucial for engineers and architects to adapt and innovate with structural health monitoring technologies to ensure these cultural landmarks remain safe and vibrant for generations to come. ❓ What do you think? Changing expectations in workplace design, sustainability, and the use of Artificial Intelligence in the architectural profession were topics discussed by Mark Cavagnero and fellow architects and designers at Bisnow's Bay Area Architecture and Design Summit in San Francisco last week. More than 280 people were in attendance. Mark touched on the use of daylight, acoustics and the human elements of a workspace along with use of AI in the architectural design process. “We’ve had to really focus on what it means to be in a space, any space, whether it’s a home or a downtown office building for hours and hours and hours.
