A few years ago, I came across a sentence in a podcast "A city is not about its spectacles, but the enacted process it encompasses”. Somehow, that made a lot of sense to me in terms of how cities are perceived. How much significance do these spectacles lend to a city? And how does the enacted process cater to its essence? And how can we distinguish between these two aspects? When we were asked to choose an independent study topic, I eventually settled on 'Spatial Appropriation.' The goal was to select a topic and document/analyze it across five cities: New York, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam, and London. During this process, I attempted to identify instances where people had appropriated a particular place for their needs, diverging from the place's original intended purpose. This could include performances on the street, musicians on a bridge, and so on. Here's a small collection of such places that I found fitting under the category of 'enacted process'. Personally, experiencing these places and documenting them brought me a lot of joy.
