“H2Carrier plans #PowertoX production of #hydrogen and #ammonia in Norway” April 23, 2024, - Aida Čučuk “Norwegian company H2Carrier has applied to the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE) for the development of two large #onshorewindfarms in Finnmark County to produce #greenhydrogen and ammonia.” “The first #windfarm , Oksefjorden, will be located at the Skjøtnigberg/Nordkyn peninsula in the municipalities of Lebesby and Gamvik, while the second wind farm, Rubbedalshøgda, will be based at the Varanger peninsula in the municipalities of Båtsfjord and Berlevåg. H2 Carrier said that the plans have been developed in cooperation with the host municipalities who already have been formally notified about the company’s intention to start the planning work.” “The two wind farms have a planned installed capacity of 1,55 GW with an estimated annual production of 6356 GWh. The estimated annual production volume of green hydrogen and ammonia is 109,000 and 610,000 tons, respectively. Co-Existence policy the key in renewable push! Land access is one of the ongoing issues raised by AMEC members. Recently, there has been heightened awareness, with the race for renewable energy at risk of “sterilising the land without its full mining potential being understood.” Highlighted in Queensland’s The Courier-Mail today, with AMEC CEO Warren Pearce saying, while the energy transition is strongly supported, more planning is needed to ensure resource and renewable energy projects could “thrive off the back of one another”. AMEC will continue to advocate for a multi-land-use policy that will allow for such activities as agriculture, renewable energy and resources to take place at the same time. “Equinor buys its way into project envisaged as ‘premier regional #carbonstoragehub ’ in US” CARBON CAPTURE USAGE & STORAGE August 29, 2023, by Melisa Cavcic “Norwegian state-owned energy giant Equinor has gotten its hands on a stake in a #carboncaptureandsequestration (#CCS ) project located along the Texas Gulf Coast, which is positioned to become one of the largest U.S. CCS projects.” “Equinor has acquired a 25 per cent interest in Bayou Bend CCS, which is envisioned as one of the largest CCS solutions in the U.S. for industrial emitters, with nearly 140,000 gross acres of pore space for permanent CO2 sequestration and gross potential storage resources of more than one billion metric tons. Hydrogen-Derived Steel: A Greener Path for Wind Farms? In a significant move towards decarbonizing the wind industry, Denmark's Orsted has signed an agreement with German steel producer Dillinger to explore the use of hydrogen-derived steel in wind farm components. While this marks a promising step, the question remains: how green will it be? Dillinger's "lower-emission" steel will initially be produced using a mix of hydrogen and methane. This raises concerns as hydrogen-based direct-reduced iron (DRI), when paired with renewable energy-powered electric arc furnaces, is currently the only proven pathway to zero-emission steel production. Despite these concerns, Orsted believes the agreement will reduce "process emissions" by 55-60% compared to conventional steel. The company also highlights the potential to meet future decarbonization criteria in renewable energy auctions. It's worth noting that other companies are also making progress in this area. Vattenfall has announced plans to purchase near-zero emissions steel from Hybrit, a Swedish green steel program, as early as 2024. Overall, while the use of hydrogen-derived steel in wind farms is an encouraging development, it's crucial to maintain a focus on achieving true zero-emission steel production. With the deadline for federal Inflation Reduction Act funding approaching at the end of the year, I’ve been fielding a lot of questions about how these tax credits can help renewable energy projects like biogas facilities. The IRA incentivizes projects intended to mitigate the effects of climate change by generating electricity through renewable sources. For utilities that reconfigure plants to maximize biogas production, the Inflation Reduction Act will cover about half the cost of construction and design. These projects may be able to pursue other federal programs to secure even more money. To get the most IRA incentives possible, construction on these projects needs to begin by Dec. 31 of this year. It’s a big opportunity for getting biogas projects off the ground in a timely, and more affordable manner. But there’s a lot to learn in a short amount of time. Kiewit is able to help utilities navigate the IRA process so they can pursue biogas projects sooner rather than later.
