Design tip – the benefits of using a smaller colour scheme. Ideally your brand should have between one and three primary colours that you use, and up to three secondary colours that can contrast or complement your main colours. A smaller colour palette will simplify your design, using different tones of the same colour can help with consistency, it won’t cause overwhelm by making your design look too busy, and you can start to build your brand a distinct look with every new piece you create. It may be tempting to want to throw lots of different or bright colours at a design for immediate impact – but keep this idea in mind and watch your designs become impactful in other ways. #freelancedesigner #graphicdesign #affordabledesign #colourscheme #brandcolours #branding #useofcolourindesign #designtip

It's a tale as old as time – a design team creates a stunning concept, but when it comes to bringing that vision to life, things go awry because they didn’t consider the real-world implications of bringing that design to life on a grand scale. Here’s a real-world example: I worked on a textile packaging concept design a while ago that was meant to evoke a feeling of luxury and glamour. The design agency designed it all right - by bedazzling it with sapphires. The design agency brief was meant to be aspirational, and that was mission accomplished. But the budget for the actual packaging was $2.00. Needless to say, there were no sapphires in production. Another time, a design team came up with an interesting idea: what if they decorated the bottle's interior to create a unique visual effect? Their idea was to spray paint the INSIDE of a spirits bottle. I have to say I have never seen a worse idea. My point is that when design and execution teams don't communicate effectively, it leads to wasted time and resources, not to mention frustration for everyone involved. So, how do we bridge this gap? The answer is simple: collaboration from the very beginning. Designing packaging, especially for spirits, has real-world limitations. Understanding the artistic vision should be balanced with user experience, production costs, and, ideally, sustainability. I’m curious: do any of you have stories of a time when you discovered you and your design team were on two different pages? #PackagingDesign #SpiritsIndustry #PackagingIndustry

It is fascinating how each ProWein is different in the way of design. A year seems too short of a period to spot a trend, but here we are. The biggest thing this year is cutouts. Technically sophisticated, at sharp angles, close to the margins, overlapping the underlying label – all the impossible combinations. Another trending finish is micro foil and structured foil. Beautiful examples of fine lines, patterns and textures embossed in the hot foil. Still golden, mostly. A burst of botanical illustration, both in the New and Old World. Overall, the labels tend to become smaller and migrate to the top of the bottle. Good news for the environment and the costs. Talking of the environment and sustainability: lots of lightweight packaging. 300 gr/750 ml glass bottles, PET bottles for the sparkling (good-looking, but prone to scratches), and aluminium wine bottles. Hope this one trend lasts, and we will see even more considerate and elegant packaging.
