The biggest challenge in construction? It’s not always what you’d expect. Over the years, I’ve learned that managing construction in live environments requires more than technical expertise. And that goes for anything from a whisky distillery to a listed building. It’s about solving problems before they happen. Take distilleries, for example. These are operational facilities where downtime often isn’t an option. Every decision has to balance precision and efficiency without disrupting production. Or listed buildings. You’re restoring structures while preserving history. That means navigating restrictions, working with delicate materials, and collaborating with specialists to get it right. Here’s what helps overcome these challenges: 1. Detailed planning: You need a clear roadmap but the flexibility to adapt when the unexpected happens. 2. Communication: When teams, clients, and specialists are aligned, issues are resolved faster. 3. Commitment to quality: Cutting corners isn’t an option. Every detail matters. The goal at Colorado Construction is always the same: To ensure we are 'Building Excellence, Creating Legacy'. What’s your tip(s) for overcoming project challenges?

Buildots for me is all about two things: helping construction professionals avoid and tackle problems, and doing it in a way that truly speaks to them and helps them, not giving them one more friction point to handle. That is why I am really proud of this new feature, Delay Forecast. It is essentially about avoiding delays by catching fires when they are still small. The ability to tackle an issue when it has not yet escalated is critical. The ability to allow professionals to see the issues when they are still at that point, is critical for both project success and to the overall experience of managing a construction project, which is just as important if we want to have high quality individuals staying in this industry long-term. The launch marks a significant step forward in the world of Performance-Driven Construction Management, from simply knowing where you stand to better predicting and managing project outcomes. We have developed this new feature in line with our clients’ priorities, and the results are clear and quantifiable. Our analysis of projects using Delay Forecast in conjunction with our Performance-Driven Construction Management (PDCM) approach shows a reduction in delays of up to 50%. By measuring the progress of activities using past average pace and performance data, Buildots is able to flag activities at risk of delay before they cause problems further down the line. By providing our clients with the information they need to course-correct, they can limit the number of surprises as they progress throughout their projects. I’m very proud of what we continue to achieve here at Buildots, and it's great to be working with such forward-thinking clients that make this a possibility. The construction manager and I had been using my planning system for quite a while at this point but the following question let me know he had just now fully understood it: "So, you mean every time I underrun the required for next week the following week the required goes up?" "Yes" Very Long Pause "We better get over that required if this project is going to be a success." "Yes" I don't like showing a bow wave building. I would much rather show that we could pull it in but guess what? That bow wave is building on 99% of the projects in the world and they are COMPLETELY oblivious to it. It's easy to talk about the ambiguities of performance indexes and you are 2.5% behind plan or 8 days behind schedule. These are not specific to what direct action is required. Work 2.5% faster? Work 8 days harder? A very hazy general direction but far from actionable. Respreading is harsh, in your face and the bow waves can build EXTREMELY quick. It's very uncomfortable to look at but the reality is always there, just not visible. Get those period planned bars out of your progress charts. Yesterday. As soon as you start work it's GAME ON and the profile in front of the status date is living and breathing. You should have only 2 period bars in your charts. The historical and the RESPREAD required. I have a template and a pdf manual on how to transform the legacy static chart for anyone who is interested or would like to send it to someone who could use it.
