What an amazing time of year! The gardens our employee owners construct and organically maintain are booming with flowers and buzzing with activity – both ours (human) and others (the pollinators!). Following a fun conversation that Dale Nussbaum, pla, asla, our CEO, had with a client where they were sharing stories of cross-pollinating fruit trees with a Q-tip amidst cold, wet spring weather, we wanted to take a moment to praise the real pollinators and share a little bit more about them. You know about bees, but there are many other pollinators (birds, insects, bats and even some mammals) we count on for blooming beauty, food, raw materials, and so much more. Thank you, pollinators! Learn more about how we need them, and they need us at https://lnkd.in/eXX8PiQ. In celebration of #WorldBeeDay, you can help these important pollinators by adding beneficial plants to your garden. Pennsylvania has many natives that support bees: PERENNIALS Coneflowers, also known as Echinacea, are a popular choice for pollinator gardens in Zone 6 because of their long blooming season and hardiness. Other smart options include milkweed, also known as Asclepias, which is the only host plant for the monarch butterfly, and bee balm, also known as Monarda, which has tubular flowers in pink, red, or purple. MID-SEASON FLOWERS Flowers that bloom in mid-season that attract bees include anise hyssop, black-eyed Susans, coneflowers, catmint, cleome, penstemon, globe thistle, milkweed, monarda (bee balm), coreopsis, daisies, phlox, gaillardia, and yarrow. OTHER NATIVES Other native plants that support bees include goldenrod, which is one of the most important late-season pollinator plants, and lavender. #pennslyvania #worldbeeday #bees #gardendesign #landscapedesign

Plant of the Month - Hawthorne Crataegus monogyna (kra-TE-gus mon-o-JIN-a) Hawthorn Hawthorn is a well-known native plant found in many hedgerows and also as small trees. It also supports many other species, making it invaluable for biodiversity. This is a story about a project I created for my daughter and her partner: They had just moved into a newly built house and wanted to create a garden suitable for themselves and their children. The garden was the usual associated with new houses with “tiny patio and seeded lawn”. However, at the bottom of the garden were the only remains on the whole of the new estate of an overgrown hedgerow. I showed them the possibility of clearing all the bramble and cutting back the lower branches to create multi-stemmed trees. They had to remove one of them to fit the patio they wanted, but the trees have become a feature of the garden, providing an appearance of maturity,at no cost. The trees provide shade to parts of the garden, privacy from the neighbours, flowers in the spring and berries in the autumn and of course, lots of birds and butterflies. For more information about this plant don't hesitate to drop Hilary a line at info@allchangeconsulting.co.uk or visit her website https://lnkd.in/dHGC7fRk #hawthorne #plantofthemonth #Wildlife #allchangeconstulting #RHSRecommended
