At the International Dairy Federation's 2024 World Milk Summit in Paris, the international dairy community united on Friday, October 18, to sign the Paris Declaration on Sustainability, reaffirming our commitment to a sustainable transformation of the sector. This important step reinforces our collective responsibility to combat climate change and promote sustainable practices. We’re proud to share that our founder, Albert Straus, signed this significant declaration on behalf of Straus Family Creamery. Key commitments include: ◾ Setting quantified sustainability goals with clear timelines; ◾ Sharing best practices to accelerate sustainable solutions; ◾ Encouraging innovation and introducing incentives to ensure the dairy sector thrives sustainably while supporting the livelihoods of its professionals. This summit marks a major milestone but also serves as a reminder of the efforts still needed to meet the 2030 Agenda goals. But did you know that there’s an initiative to make Belgian chocolate even better and more sustainable? The #BeyondChocolate initiative is a partnership for a sustainable Belgian chocolate industry. Partners in the initiative are working to end deforestation, stimulate education for future generations, and provide a living income for cocoa growers. 🌱 By 2025, chocolate produced or sold in Belgium will be covered by a sustainability standard and in compliance with the “Cocoa & Forests” initiative 🤝 By 2025, all partners will comply with the “Cocoa & Forests” initiative agreements 💰 By 2030, all cocoa growers that supply to the Belgian market will earn at least a living income 🌳 By 2030, deforestation related to cocoa production for the Belgian market will have ended #WorldChocolateDay #BelgianChocolate

#Transition🌱 | Cacao is a lifeline for over 6 million farmers who depend on selling the beans for their income. Cacao trees are vital to forest ecosystems, supporting biodiversity and offering sustainable livelihoods. We’re calling on chocolate companies, bean buyers, cacao organisations and experts across Latin America (especially in #Ecuador) to collaborate with us on this transformative journey. Let’s connect and collaborate! 🍫 The value of cacao goes far beyond only the beans used to make chocolate. This year, Dutch start-up Pacha de Cacao is teaming up with specialists from Wageningen University & Research, the Czech University of Life Sciences Prague, and several other incredible partners, who will jointly explore sustainable cacao production in Ecuador from a more integral perspective. We’ll dive into ways to reduce waste and turn byproducts into valuable resources, aiming to improve incomes, curb deforestation and lower emissions. 🍏 We’re grateful for the trust and support we receive from the DRG4Food team and the European Union. Insights from Sibö Chocolate Tour Company I recently had the incredible opportunity to attend an educational talk titled “Sibö Company Development & Sustainability” during my doctoral course in Costa Rica. Hosted by Sibö Chocolate, the talk was led by Julio Fernandez Amón, the company's visionary creator. Sibö Chocolate is a shining example of how sustainability is woven into the fabric of a business. At Sibö Chocolate, sustainability means integrating ethical business practices, responsible natural resource usage, environmental impact mitigation, and community support while ensuring long-term quality and growth. Luker Chocolates, a Colombian company, is using advanced tracing methods to improve the social and environmental impact of its cocoa sourcing. By tracking cocoa from farm to factory, Luker Chocolate aims to address issues like forced labour, deforestation, and biodiversity loss. This approach is crucial as new regulations require businesses to ensure their supply chains are free from deforestation and human rights abuses. 𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗛𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝗖𝗼𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗲 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝘁 #𝟭 Sustainability is said to be based on the premise of farmers' livelihoods. But how does the coffee industry tackle the balance between environment and livelihoods? Our Group thrives on many different perspectives from all our locations worldwide. We want to make these points of view visible – starting with Becamo, one of the largest and most reliable coffee exporters in Honduras. As a coffee and people passionate, the coffee exporter truly believes in a holistic approach, recognizing the vital role of every member within the green coffee value chain. Marcela Zelaya, Marketing and Communications, spoke to José Manuel Calero Moraga, Head of Sustainable Business Unit Why is it so important for the coffee industry to take care of the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and how do you try to enhance the situation (for example initiatives or projects)? Although 96 % of producers in Honduras operate on less than 7 hectares, they are responsible for an impressive 74 % of the nation’s coffee volume. The significance of caring for small producers lies in their vulnerability to various industry challenges, such as climate change, labor shortages due to migration, lack of access to financing, technical assistance and technology. To ensure well-being of smallholders, we actively support initiatives focused on providing access to clean water, distributing school kits, establishing daycare centers, and offering food baskets. How do you deal with climate change and thus environmental sustainability?🌏 🌱 We tackle climate change proactively with our dedicated Unit for Sustainable Services to Producers (USSP). Consisting of a team of 35 field agronomists, we work closely with 4,000 families, addressing a wide array of environmental concerns. Our efforts encompass various aspects including waste management, integrated pest and disease management, biofertilizer production, soil regeneration, species diversity preservation, and safe agrochemical practices.  Our vision for sustainability extends further, as we are in the process of hiring additional agronomists, reaching a total of 53 in the field, to support 14,000 producers nationwide. What are special engagements at Becamo that you would love to share with the audience? The integration of women and youth in our sustainability programs is crucial. That's why we've developed coffee brands specifically highlighting women and youth, aiming to inspire them to remain active in the sector. Moreover, we are committed to child protection and fair labor practices. Our holistic approach to sustainability emphasizes our dedication to preserving communities and empowering our producers for the future of the Honduran coffee industry.
