#POLYURETHANE #WATERPROOFING Did you know? (Part 5) Conventional systems are classified as aromatic due to the presence of a benzene ring in their chemical structure. This aromatic nature can cause surface yellowing in light-coloured coatings, but darker shades do not show significant discoloration. To achieve color-fast finishes, aliphatic polyurethane #coatings are used. These coatings utilize aliphatic isocyanates, which do not exhibit yellowing tendencies. Initially, aliphatic isocyanates were solvent-based, but now solvent-free systems are preferred for health and safety reasons. Utilizing aliphatic isocyanates allows for the creation of waterproofing polyurethane membranes in brilliant white and various attractive shades. White finishes have excellent #solarreflective indexes, reducing peak summer roof #concrete temperatures by as much as 15°C and playing a vital role in #coolroof systems. Aliphatic isocyanates also allow for the incorporation of decorative motifs and designs within the #roofwaterproofing, enhancing aesthetics without compromising performance. While aliphatic isocyanates can be more expensive as standalone systems, a cost-effective option is to apply a thin topcoat over the aromatic system for color stability at a reasonable cost. This approach combines the benefits of both #aliphatic and aromatic systems while minimizing expenses.
