“Seen from the vantage point of the present, the future appears uncertain…At the present moment we cannot know how they [future events, even in the moment] will turn out. But we can know that we ourselves or other observers will in a future present know what the situation is, and will then judge differently from the way we do now- although differences in judgement among us might arise…and in addition…what can occur in the future also depends on decisions made at the present(Luhmann, 2008, p. 16).” The only way to know if a future decision affecting an event was the right decision is to look back in hindsight. Even then disagreement can be had over how the decision should have been made. But are those using hindsight going through the same tunnel of decision making as those encountering the event with the future uncertain? Nope. It’s easy to be perfect when one looks back in time and says they should have, could have, or would have…if only they were there. Luhmann, N. (2008). Risk. A Sociological Theory. Aldine Transaction.

Link to a "letter to the editor" that I submitted and to which they heretofore have not responded to. Sadly, based on "the politics of force," this officer has been terminated. They claim it is not for this shooting but rather other incidents. One of which was a couple of years ago and was reviewed by the then chief of police. New social/progressive mayor, new acting chief vying for position, and they poured over other incidents to find a reason to appease the politicians and activists and terminate his employment. https://lnkd.in/dnxk5Ck7

In light of this, I urge the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (@OACPOfficial) to take a bold stand on addressing the mental health of their members. The time for action is now. While we commend the ongoing efforts, it is crucial to move beyond mere acknowledgments and take concrete steps to support the mental well-being of those who protect and serve our communities. Operational stress injuries, including post-traumatic stress and suicidal ideation, are real challenges that require more than lip service; they demand action, understanding, and comprehensive support systems. Let us not forget that behind every badge, there is a human being deserving of care, support, and understanding. As we celebrate the achievements of our newest members, let's also commit to ensuring their mental health and well-being are prioritized. The journey of a peacekeeper is both challenging and rewarding, and by fostering an environment that genuinely addresses mental health, we empower our officers to thrive, not just survive. #Badgeoflifecanada #HopeGrowthRecovery #Calltoaction #PAO

Wow. That’s huge and intrinsically linked with the current recruitment crisis. The reasons, in my opinion, are simple. 1) Excessive Workload/demand. 2) Exposure to trauma (without the proper time to process that trauma after the event). 3) Financial - A real terms pay cut caused by inflation in recent years affects this sector disproportionately in comparison to others because it puts a strain on family and personal lives. The very tho gs that are at the key factor in surviving points 1 and 2! All police forces are aware of this but don’t have the funding to address them effectively. More police officers would mean lower workloads and more time to cope with harrowing experiences. More pay would help attract the additional police and encourage them to stay. It would also allow them to strike the work/home life balance essential to not just cope but to thrive in a high pressure, high scrutiny AMAZING environment.
In his State of Policing report, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary Andy Cooke says that some officers and staff have unacceptably high workloads and others aren’t getting the support they need Morale is at an all-time low across forces.
