Our new waste and recycling contract with SUEZ will start on Monday 25 March. The new service will bring new technology and industry improvements, whilst retaining large parts of the existing service. Recent figures from Defra show that the Ashford borough has the highest recycling rate in Kent, with a recycling rate of 51%. Fortnightly collections of general waste and recycling will continue, alongside the weekly food waste collection and the optional fortnightly garden waste collection. However collection days and weeks may change for residents. The new vehicles are being funded directly by the council to help save costs. The new vehicles will help reduce the consumption of diesel dramatically, helping lower the services' carbon footprint. Last year Ashford was one of three Kent councils, alongside Maidstone Borough Council and Swale Borough Council, who signed the new waste and recycling contract with SUEZ. On July 26, 2024, the Ministry of Public Utilities and SWMCOL introduced three transformative policies at the Hyatt Regency under the theme 'Changing the Landscape of Waste Management.' The new policies include the National Integrated Solid Waste/Resource Management Policy 2024, the National Recycling Policy 2024, and the Beverage Containers Deposit Return Policy 2024. These initiatives aim to enhance waste management practices, promote recycling, and establish a deposit return system for beverage containers in Trinidad and Tobago. Recycling is key to keeping beverage containers in the circular economy and out of the environment. Canada has different recycling programs across the country including 10 deposit return systems and 2 Blue Box programs - each with their own reporting and financial requirements. Canada has an opportunity to become a global leader through a national framework that would improve container recycling rates, leverage our scale, and streamline recycling. By taking a collaborative and coordinated approach, provinces in Canada can lead the development of a robust and sustainable national recycling strategy that addresses the environmental challenges associated with waste management. It’s great to see Veolia and partners leading the way with waste to energy plants here in Australia. In Western Australia in Kwinana and East Rockingham and now in Victoria at Maryvale. This type of energy certainly helps bring the gap between hydrocarbons and wind, solar and Nuclear. Australia still has a long way to go, producing more than 500g of CO2 per Kwhr vs best practices in say France where it is less than 50grams CO2.

We're almost at the start of an unofficial waste prevention week - as tomorrow's Keep Britain Tidy's conference will see the launch of their latest report on how we can help the public to better understand waste prevention and the waste hierarchy, which SUEZ UK, along with CIWM, Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority have supported and contributed to the research. ♻️ The world’s top recyclers don't exceed a 60% recycling rate for municipal waste, once differences in reporting practice are accounted for. 🌍 Eight of the top ten recyclers are found within Europe, with seven being in Western Europe, reflecting the longstanding strategies and policies that have driven investments in collection, logistics, sorting and reprocessing across the continent. 🗑️ ‘Municipal waste’ is waste from households and waste from other sources that is similar in nature and composition to household waste (e.g. businesses, education establishments, public administration offices). 📊🔍 Check out the full league table and read the full report: 👇 https://lnkd.in/eXJqxt-t
