The inconvenient truth about UX job postings If you’re looking for your next UX job, don’t be fooled by sheer volume. Many job postings are inaccurate and misleading. For example, a job may be listed as “UX designer” when really they’re looking for a “UI designer”. Or, the job description may seem perfect, but the company’s culture is far from what you want. So, how do you judge UX job postings? - Be wary of vague job titles. - Scan the job description for specific tasks and responsibilities. - Research the company’s reputation and culture. Remember, quality beats quantity. Don’t waste your time on a job that isn’t a good fit. Be discerning and don’t settle. How to focus your job search as a Junior UX designer 👇🏻 If you’re just starting out in UX, you’re immediately asked to make lots of decisions about your first job. 🧑🏻💻 Work style: Remote? Hybrid? In-person? 🔍 Focus: UX research? UI design? Product design? 🧱 Structure: Start-up? Agency? Corporation? 🏙️ Industry: E-commerce? Education? Travel? (and so many more) The amount of job options and combinations can be overwhelming. How do you decide where to focus? To start, change the questions to understand what you value and are passionate about. 🧑🏻💻 Work style: Do I value in-person camaraderie or remote flexibility? 🔍 Focus: Which parts of the design process am I interested in or skilled at? 🧱 Structure: Do I value intimate work settings or defined hierarchies and teams? Do I value established processes or helping to establish processes? 🏙️ Industry: What types of products or apps have I found exciting or interesting? Start by knowing yourself. I was hoping to start sharing a list of entry level roles available at the moment. When most in the "entry level" filtered list state that they're looking for "Experience of end-to-end design" and "Several case studies demonstrating your process"... You can see why entry level Designers are struggling. If you're listing a role for entry level designers, make it clear and more realistic. If you're looking for more Junior-Mid level with 1-2 years experience, don't list it as entry. Either way, I'm going to find a way to find entry level roles easier and hopefully start sharing them for the budding junior product designers.
