https://lnkd.in/eMkVck_U The UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sanuk has drawn a bit of scrutiny for proposing National Service (military and non-military) to generate both tangible intangible societal benefits. Over 5 dozen countries have a national service program — to include the United States and its unenforced Selective Service registration process (note: no one has been prosecuted for not registering since 1986) as well as its federal jury duty system. The attached October 2023 “pro/con” article lays out the case…(should the UK…and) should the US…consider a more expansive national service system? Not just military but education, healthcare, social services…? In the case of the US, the “cons” provide very fair and pointed implementation criticisms that we experienced in the past…but by my scorecard, with improved execution, “the pros outweigh the cons” and deserve greater consideration and deliberation.

While the VFW, DAV, PVA, WWP, and other VSO’s were *testifying* on The Hill this week, on a myriad of issues impacting American service members, The American Legion was attending meetings to establish benefits programs for Ukrainian soldiers. Sure, they *attended* Hill hearings, but what message are we sending when our staff are *speaking* on behalf of Ukrainian #veterans, while our counterparts are *testifying* on behalf of Americans? Where does Ukrainian programming fall under the pillars? Americanism? Children and Youth? Is it Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation? Have we so perfected services to American veterans we can pivot focus to Ukrainians? Or is it National Security? Perhaps it’s that. Perhaps members, while concerned about mere *rumors* federal dollars for veterans may be misdirected at the southern border, would be thrilled to know staff priority this week was meeting with the Ukrainian delegation. Oh, but they physically attending hearings. Where the VFW testified. Where DAV testified. Where the WWP testified. Where the PVA testified. They listened, in person, to others actually move the needle on veteran legislation - to testimony available online. Great work. Utterly stoked (sarcasm) to see staff time diverted to researching programming for foreign nations, when basic knowledge - like how a bill becomes a law or how a budget works - is still missing. ________ 🎵: “and I’m here to sing this anthem of our dying day” #veteransaffairs #betheonetotestify #veteransstrengtheningamerica

#House and #Senate negotiators reached an accord to unlock final fiscal 2024 appropriations bills after nailing down the final defense and nondefense spending limits, party leaders announced Sunday. The deal will allow for the total level of spending laid out in last year’s debt limit agreement, with $886.3 billion for defense and $772.7 billion for nondefense programs. The latter figure includes spending agreed upon but not written into the legislative text of the debt limit law. #Lawmakers tweaked the mix of offsets and budgetary accounting to hit the $69 billion nondefense “side deal” target, which comes on top of a “base” funding level in the law totaling $703.7 billion. #ICYMI The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) recently released a report titled Service Members Transitioning to Civilian Life: Agencies Can Improve Warm Handovers for Additional Assistance. The VFW continues to advocate for legislation to improve transition from service, including H.R. 3933 / S. 2888, TAP Promotion Act, to require accredited representatives from national, state, and local organizations to be included in Transition Assistance Program classes. It has been Nine months since the war began in Sudan. SUDAN is experiencing deadly fighting between its army and Rapid Support Forces paramilitary and Internet connectivity in Sudan is at less than half of usual levels with many users experiencing a "total communications blackout", a watchdog group said in worrying news for civilian welfare: "Access to the internet has been "severely degraded" since deadly fighting between the country's army and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary began on 15 April, NetBlocks director Alp Toker told The New Arab.
