As a facilitator how do prepare before a workshop? I am a visual thinker and learner. I need to see my thoughts on paper and I need to visualise the whole outcome as if I have painted a final picture of the where. The Now Where How never fails me. This map of a family business issue consumed me over about three days as it stood in my home office. As I kept passing it over time more ideas and solutions kept being added. A two hour workshop is not just 120 minutes of effort. It’s many hours of preparation based on years of knowledge and experience. That’s what you get paid for. Finally, the participants don’t get to see my chart until after we finish the session. I am often surprised to see what I have missed in my preparation and that’s just the power of the team is always stronger than the individual.
