#𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 | When people are encouraged to speak openly about their struggles, they feel heard, understood, and less isolated. This can significantly reduce feelings of hopelessness, which are often a key factor in suicidal thoughts. By fostering a culture of empathy and understanding, 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗲, 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay #ChangeTheNarrative #WSPD

**A Trauma-Informed Approach: Recognising Neurodiversity and Mental Health in Education** In reaffirming my previous message on the importance of a trauma-informed lens in education, I want to highlight the potential connections between mental health conditions and neurological differences such as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). These conditions, often accompanied by anxiety and depression, can lead to self-medicating and substance abuse when not properly supported. Recent statistics from the "Australian Institute of Health and Welfare" report "The Health of People in Australian Prisons 2022" shed light on this issue: 🔹 **Disability Prevalence**: Nearly 1 in 5 (18%) people in Australian prisons have a disability, compared to almost 2 in 5 (39%) prison entrants aged 18 and over. 🔹 **Health Conditions**: About 1 in 4 (26%) Australian prison dischargees were first diagnosed with a health condition in prison, and almost 3 in 4 (74%) have been diagnosed with a condition at some point in their lives, including psychological/mental health conditions (46%) and substance use problems (42%). 🔹 **Intellectual Disability**: This report suggests that 25–30% of people in prison have borderline intellectual disability, and 10% have a mild intellectual disability. 🔹 **Mental Health**: More than half (51%) of prison entrants reported a mental health condition at some stage, highlighting the importance of mental health to overall wellbeing. (Mental health conditions, according to the report, are chronic conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and alcohol and other drug use disorders. These conditions can influence thoughts, feelings, behaviour, stress levels, relationships and decision-making.) These figures are a stark reminder of the prevalence of neurodiversity and mental health issues within our society. It is imperative that we, as educators, support our students, from early childhood by developing their abilities, recognising their capabilities, building positive relationships and maintaining high expectations. By doing so, we can increase their opportunities to lead fulfilling lives as successful, educated, literate, and numerate citizens. Now is time, to commit to understanding and supporting all students, especially those with neurological differences and mental health conditions, to prevent a cycle of disadvantage and promote a more inclusive and equitable society. #Neurodiversity #InclusiveEducation #MentalHealthAwareness #TraumaInformedEducation #SocialJustice

Reflecting on the challenge of slowing down in a fast-paced world. Sometimes our inability to take things easier is rooted in trauma, which can be normalized in social justice discussions. It's important to recognize these patterns and prioritize healing. #Reflections #SocialJustice #TraumaAwareness #HealingJustice #Digginguptheseeds #JusticeWarriors #sparkyourfreedom

Overthinkers, often shaped by difficult childhood experiences, can exhibit hyper-vigilant tendencies due to past trauma. It's important to recognize and support individuals who may be struggling with this, as they bring valuable perspectives and strengths to the table. Let's work together to create a more inclusive and understanding environment for all professionals. #MentalHealthAwareness #InclusiveWorkplaces.

Passion for practice development. Vulnerable leadership inspiring trauma informed therapeutic interventions that support the wellbeing of children, infants, youth and families.
By having a deep understanding of how our environment and experiences impact us physically, mentally and socially we can start to join the dots and understand why this person is the way they are in their developmental story. #TraumaInformed Being trauma informed takes time- time to listen and time to heal. I believe that if we are trauma informed we can change systems and reduce institutionalised harm. With a relational approach we can alow time and space for that person feel safe, seen, secure and soothed. Teaching them to access their resource of safety and find meaningful connection through repetitious experiences. We can build resilience. Everyone has this innate capacity. Some people just need a little more support ✨🌼 #Trauma
