Alarming Study Confirms PFAS Can Seep Through Human Skin🌍💧 A recent study highlighted by ScienceAlert has confirmed that PFAS, or "forever chemicals," can permeate human skin, raising significant health concerns. These chemicals, found in everyday items like non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, and even cosmetics, are now proven to enter our bodies through skin contact. Key Points: - PFAS, known for their persistence in the environment, are linked to severe health risks, including cancer, infertility, and immune system suppression. - This study underscores the urgency of addressing PFAS contamination comprehensively, as it impacts not only our water and food but also direct human contact. At SUIKI, we are committed to developing innovative solutions to destroy PFAS in water, tackling this issue at its source. This new research highlights the critical need for effective PFAS removal and destruction technologies to safeguard public health. 🚀 Join Us in the Fight Against PFAS Your insights and collaboration are invaluable as we work towards a safer, cleaner future. Connect with us to discuss how we can collectively combat the PFAS challenge. Let's innovate together for a healthier tomorrow. #PFAS #ForeverChemicals #HealthRisks #EnvironmentalHealth #WaterTreatment #Innovation #CleanWater #Sustainability #PFASDestruction #PublicHealth #Research Read more: https://lnkd.in/d69BJ9-R

Forever Chemicals Seep Through Human Skin, Alarming Study Confirms An inescapable form of human pollution is seeping into our bodies in ways we never fully realized. University of Birmingham scientists have shown using models of human tissue that 'forever chemicals' like PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are surprisingly capable of passing through our skin. When these stubbornly persistent materials were first created more than half a century ago, companies like DuPont – the maker of Teflon – were aware that some of these non-stick, waterproof substances were "highly toxic" when inhaled and "moderately toxic" when ingested. As far back as 1961, secretly held company documents show that Teflon's head toxicologist knew that some types of long-lasting PFAS should not make contact with the skin. Fast forward to 2024, and independent scientists are only now beginning to show that the skin is a significant source of exposure for some of the most widespread and well-studied PFAS chemicals out there. Today, PFAS are found in numerous products designed especially for our dermis, including cosmetics as ubiquitous as sunscreen, moisturizers, and cleansers. "The ability of these chemicals to be absorbed through skin has previously been dismissed because the molecules are ionized," explains environmental scientist Oddný Ragnarsdóttir. "The electrical charge that gives them the ability to repel water and stains was thought to also make them incapable of crossing the skin membrane."... Source: https://lnkd.in/gi5EqCuM

"The study found that shorter-chain PFAS are absorbed more easily through the skin and into the bloodstream compared to longer-chain compounds." These shorter chain PFAS are the ones that AIMM is focused on improving water filters to capture. "As an aware consumer, you can take steps to reduce your exposure to forever chemicals. Start by seeking out PFAS-free personal care and beauty products." "Supporting policies that restrict PFAS in consumer goods is another powerful way to drive change." "each conscious choice you make as a consumer sends a signal to companies that you prioritize products that are safer for you, your loved ones, and our planet." #PFAS #foreverchemicals #WATERFILTRATION #waterfilters #waterfilter #aimmlabs #nanomaterials #nanotech #Nanotechnology https://lnkd.in/gsRkRn_h

"virtually no level of exposure to these chemicals is safe for humans,". "they're used in everything from, like, rugs to raincoats...anything that you've used that has waterproofing in it. And they're also in makeup, and they're certainly in things that play a role in absorbency." This legislation will reduce peoples' exposure to PFAS! Another way to do so is to remove PFAS from your water. AIMM is working on our filter which will more quickly remove a wider range of PFAS. #water #SafeWater #safewaterforall #WATERFILTRATION #waterfilter #waterfilters #nanomaterials #nanotechnology #nanotech #aimmlabs https://lnkd.in/gwyjFbnY

PFAS Can Enter the Body Through Skin: New Research Shows 🧬 A new study in Environment International reveals that PFAS (perfluoroalkyl substances), harmful chemicals that don’t break down in nature, can penetrate the skin and enter the bloodstream. Previously, exposure was thought to occur mainly through ingestion or inhalation, but this research shows skin absorption is a significant route. 🚨 PFAS are common in everyday products, from school uniforms to personal care items. The study found that 15 out of 17 tested PFAS showed substantial skin absorption, with some chemicals, like perfluoro pentanoic acid, absorbed at rates as high as 59%. This discovery is crucial because it shows that even “safer” short-chain PFAS might pose a health risk. Why Does This Matter? We Need to Eliminate PFAS Now! 🌍 Given their harmful effects, including liver damage and decreased birth weight, finding ways to destroy PFAS is urgent. Solutions like our technology to eliminate these “forever chemicals” are essential to reducing exposure and protecting public health. 🛑 #PFAS #ForeverChemicals #EnvironmentalHealth #ChemicalSafety #Sustainability

A new study on widespread “forever chemicals” by the University of Birmingham published in Environment International (https://lnkd.in/gpu8JChy ) proved for the first time that a wide range of #PFAS chemicals can be readily absorbed through human skin. Although the chemicals are already well known to enter the body through other means such as ingestion (eating and drinking) and inhalation, it has until recently been thought that PFAS are unable to breach the skin barrier. The new study, however, confirms that most of them can enter the body via this route. Dr. Oddny Ragnarsdóttir, the lead author of the study, stated: “The ability of these chemicals to be absorbed through skin has previously been dismissed because the molecules are ionized. The electrical charge that gives them the ability to repel water and stains was thought to also make them incapable of crossing the skin membrane”. The research instead shows that this theory does not always hold, and significant amounts of PFAS exposure can be a result of absorption through the skin. Among the thousands of different types of PFAS, the researchers chose 17 of the most widely used and studied, and those that directly corresponded to chemicals specifically regulated by the EU’s Drinking Water Directive. Of the 17 tested PFAS, 15 showed substantial absorption of at least 5% of the exposure dose. The study also showed that absorption correlated with carbon chain length, with longer chain molecules absorbing less than shorter chain molecules. This study provides much needed evidence of how skin contact and carbon chain length can affect exposure and raises several questions at a time when industry is shifting towards shorter chain PFAS believing them to be less toxic.
