The Global Returns Project's model for supporting climate action is a much-needed solution and has huge impacts. They are currently supporting our ReForest Fund and helping restore native forests worldwide for people, nature and the climate. In this Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, the climate needs all the help it can get.

Our annual appeals have always been an essential source of funding but this year the Big Give Christmas Challenge will play an even bigger role. ⌛ We need to raise £15,000 in pledges by the 8th September. If we are successful, we then have a chance of reaching a total of £60,000 when the challenge runs in December. 🌲 Over the last 10 years, we’ve planted more than 28 million trees with 19 partners across 12 countries. And in 2023-24 we encouraged more than 12,000 local and Indigenous community members to participate in the restoration of their lands, with women making up more than 50% of those participating and almost 500 taking leadership roles in the projects. Call of the Sea recently joined  1% for the Planet. 1% for the Planet is a global network with thousands of businesses and environmental organizations working together to support people and the planet. There are more than 5,200 business members, each of which pledges to donate 1% of their annual profits to organizations working to improve the environment. Currently, Call of the Sea is one of more than 7,000 environmental partners around the world. If your company has made the 1% pledge (and why wouldn’t it?), it can choose Call of the Sea as a recipient of some of its donations. Volunteer hours and in-kind donations count, as do financial gifts. Companies can donate to as many organizations as they like, so please ask your company to include Call of the Sea as one of the recipients in its 1% donations. The Impact of This Support   Contributions help: - Provide scholarships and transportation subsidies for underserved youth in the 9 counties of the Bay area.  - Maintain and operate educational vessels. - Develop innovative environmental education curricula. - Enhance outreach and community engagement efforts, including for our upcoming 40th anniversary celebration Gala40. BrightCarbon was certified for our 1% for the Planet giving for 2023 last month. That means we donated 1% of our annual revenue (not profit) for last year to environmental causes. We'll do it again in future years too. Our two largest donations were to Cool Earth and Earthjustice - although we also gave to five national and local charities. Our BrightCarbon environment committee suggested organisations we could donate to, and then all employees were given a chance to vote on those choices - with our giving proportionate to the votes received in different categories. I'm not certain, but I hope that involving the entire team makes this feel like everyone's donation - we all worked to make the money, and we all had a say in where it was spent. 1% of our revenue isn't going to be enough to save the planet, obviously. But if more companies did this, more good would be done. At a time when people are looking for meaning in what they do, this makes every project we deliver count for something bigger too. No greenwashing, no navel-gazing, just one small attempt to do some good. P.S. A photo of the northern lights, which I completely missed last week when they were actually visible from my street.
