Yesterday I spoke to a manager who has a target to hire 2 SCADA engineers...every month! How I asked? He told me he has a TA team of 8 strong looking to add a 9th, but...the delivery of quality candidates is still lacking. He understood because SCADA is such a small niche skill set, but he's not allowed to use specialist services like mine either due to budget restrictions. So...I asked again...how?! Well he said...I'm proactive. He essential does the job himself and headhunts! Now whilst frustrating, as his time could/should be more efficiently invested elsewhere, he gets it. His team, his people, are the single most important factor to determining his success. Hiring, training, motivating and supporting them is all he cares about. This is an exceptional leader (if you'd be interested in an introduction to them, DM me!) who is willing to get his hands dirty to get the very best talent out there. Yesterday a VP asked me what's your secret... They advised I seem to keep on supplying good talent, so whilst they have 2 strong contenders at the final stage, perhaps they should wait before making a final decision... NO! In the talent market, just like every other market in the world, good deals go fast! If someone is that good, they'll likely have many options and so they may not be around for you to come back around to later. You also have no guarantees that the candidates you're going to speak to in the future will be better, or even as good. You can only tell so much on paper. If you have a top-tier talent in front of you with the technical skills and culture fit within your budget that you can see being of value to the team...act now! Do not risk waiting and shopping around for better, I've seen this indecision cost many SCADA/OT leaders, don't let that be you. TIP - QUICK, EFFICIENT INTERVIEW PROCESS So many senior engineers and leaders in my network share that their interview experience was a big factor in their decision to join a company. It creates an impression of the business, both consciously and subconsciously. When a process is efficient and it's clear why you're meeting each person at each stage, it shows the company is well-organized. When feedback, subsequent rounds and offers are all rolled out quickly, it shows that the business is serious about hiring and creates a positive momentum. I've seen this develop a level of excitement in talent that has got them to accept offers from companies that initially were not their first choice. These individuals are elite and never short on options, so focusing on the seemingly small details of your hiring process, can make a massive difference. It also will facilitate you being in a position to offer ahead of your competition and often, those who offer first, not always best, wins the race for top talent. Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems are used for monitoring and controlling industrial processes and infrastructure, particularly in sectors like energy, water, manufacturing, and transportation. System Maintenance and Support: This includes identifying and resolving technical issues within SCADA systems to minimize downtime and maintain optimal performance. ↳ ... Upgrades and Patches: Implementing software updates and patches to keep SCADA systems secure and up to date with the latest features and improvements. ↳ ... System Health checks: Conducting regular system checks to prevent issues and ensure the longevity of SCADA systems. ↳ ... TIP - HAVE THE TOUGH CONVERSATIONS I just had a candidate turn an offer down and both the Director and I agreed it was a good thing. Why? Because there were some reservations regarding their communication and collaboration. How did we address them? The only way, openly and transparently with the candidate, as early as possible. They initially seemed to react well, but ultimately lacked the professional maturity to do the same. They had their own reservations, but lacked the confidence to address them openly. Instead, they waited until after the process and offer. Even then, they could only communicate their issues sheepishly via email. Anyone lacking the confidence to have challenging conversations, in a constructive manner, is of no real value to an organization, so we agreed we dodged a bullet. This is a learn in how to hire the best talent, because it will also help you avoid hiring the sub-par. Express yourself as transparently as possible throughout the process, ask the tough questions and address any concerns head on. The best talent will respect you more for it, as it indicates a strong and healthy management style. It will also help you weed out the not-so-great. TIP - IF YOU HAVE TO CANCEL, DO IT IN TIMLEY MANNOR First impressions are everything in an interview process and having to cancel is never a great one to make. Having said that, everyone understands that sometimes life happens and it's unavoidable. But, there is little to no excuse for doing it last minute. It screams to the other party "I don't respect your time". I had an example of a manager who canceled one minute before the interview was set to begin. The senior SCADA professional had rearranged travel plans to make the interview. Needless to say, they were far from happy. They withdrew from the process and were so disgruntled, they'd never consider interviewing with that company or manager ever again. Now, you might consider that reaction to be a tad short-sighted and over-emotional. But ultimately, it cost the company a chance to hire a very experienced engineer with one of the rarest skill sets in the field. Not to mention, the reputational damage in our very small, highly-competitve sector. All of which could have been easily avoided with more planning and prioritization. In conclusion, if you have to cancel an interview, do it as soon as possible, because it really does matter. TIP - MAINTAIN THE MOMENTUM / 'GOOD FEELS' I recently had an experienced engineer come out of a final round interview on cloud nine. They were 100% sure this was the right team for them to join. Fast forward a few days, no offer...those good feels began to fad. Then an offer came and it was below expectations, those good feels turn. The offer even makes him question if the role is senior enough to be worth the move... Are the two factors related? Absolutely! If that offer had been made immediately after the final, when the positive emotions were high, would a slightly lower offer have been such a big deal? Probably not. But a week later? It was a huge deal! Enough to almost cost this company their guy. Luckily we were able to reconnect them with their potential team, get them reassurance on the level of role and reminded of the great culture they'd be joining. The good feels returned and there was a happy ending for all. But, it was risked, due to delays and inaction, killing the momentum.
