Evidence shows "Universal Free Meals" (UFM), a program providing free lunch and breakfast for all students, regardless of income, is an inexpensive and effective way to improve academic performance among urban schoolchildren. District and school leaders nationwide should consider adopting this program. Read more: #NationalNutritionMonth

This isn’t limited to relationships between teachers and students. This is also essential for managers to understand. Strong HR practices are important and necessary, but the obligation to create workplaces that are inclusive and humane really falls on managers. Managers shouldn’t be passive and let care for employees just fall on HR. We need to be proactive in supporting our teams.

In conversation with a number of my faculty colleagues, it has become apparent that in our various institutions' eagerness to care for the needs of students (which is right and just), we have sometimes implemented systems that replace personal connection. But the best care for students' needs often comes from direct engagement from understanding and empathetic teachers and mentors. This has been revealed to me again even this semester, once students who were relying on systems of accommodation to address their needs came to talk to me personally about what they were going through. Not only were our solutions more targeted and effective in response, but we also got to know each other better and something like joy emerged where before there were a lot of burdens. This is not to discount the true importance of having thoughtful and consistent procedures in place for student care (my goodness, we need those!), but it is to see that as our institutions have gotten better at developing those systems that we need to check them against the personal, human element that makes the best education truly humanizing and beautiful.

Last year, I began a dialogue with Ohio legislators about the importance of providing every student in the state with free breakfast and lunch at school, regardless of their parents’ or guardians’ income. This initiative aims to eliminate the stigma associated with receiving free meals and ensure that all students have access to the nutrition they need to perform well academically and function effectively throughout the school day. While some may oppose the idea of universal free meals for all students, it is crucial to consider the broader benefits of such a program. Ensuring that every student has access to nutritious meals can lead to: Improved Academic Performance: Proper nutrition is linked to better concentration, memory, and overall cognitive function, which can result in improved academic outcomes. Enhanced Student Well-being: Access to consistent, healthy meals supports students' physical and emotional well-being, reducing anxiety and stress related to food insecurity. Equity and Inclusion: Providing free meals for all students promotes equity and inclusion, fostering a positive and supportive school environment. To achieve this goal, continued advocacy and collaboration with lawmakers, educators, and community stakeholders are essential. By highlighting the positive impacts on student health, academic achievement, and school culture, we can build a strong case for implementing universal free meal programs in Ohio schools. #education #ohioschools

Leeds University has recently released a report to say that in the 22/23 reception intake - 33% of children (rising to 45% for children entitled to free school meals) were not considered 'school ready' Now, this particular cohort will have been most affected by the impact of lockdown as they wouldn't have had any access to pre school provision but, anecdotally, we see that this trend has continued. So what is the answer? Well, that's the million dollar question of course but one thing would be to meet children where they are right now. We cannot underestimate the effect of huge social shifts on early years development, our children have not just weathered a pandemic and lockdown but also a cost of living crisis and all these things change our behaviour in intangible ways and children starting school now will have had a very different journey to those starting in 19/20. As providers, we have changed our early years program to reflect some of these differences with more emphasis on developing motor skills and the social side of our sessions. As an education system, we need to support Early Years teachers to help children fill in those gaps before we add the pressure of testing and reaching attainment targets that were set in a very different world. My 2 pennies worth is that we need to start giving Early Years provision the kudos (and cash) it deserves, nurseries and reception classes are where children learn SO much about the world and where the foundations for the rest of their learning will be laid yet it is often seen as the poor relation of education. There are calls to invest heavily in Early years provision so let's hope those who make the decisions listen and most importantly - listen to the practitioners, teachers and parents who are best placed to decide where the resources are really needed.

Volusia County School District presents our ‘All Day, Every Day’ attendance initiative. Your student’s future is built one school day at a time; All Day, Every day! When your student misses just 2 days of school a month: 1. They lose 20 days of learning by year's end 2. That's 30 hours of crucial math instruction missed 3. 60 hours of essential reading and writing practice vanished 4. By graduation, this pattern results in over a year of missed education. We understand that life happens. Illnesses occur, emergencies arise. But when possible, prioritize your child's presence in school. Each day is a vital piece of their educational journey. Tips to improve attendance: 1. Establish consistent nighttime and morning routines 2. Prepare school clothes and school materials the night before 3. Schedule appointments outside school hours when possible 4. Communicate with teachers about any attendance challenges 5. Discuss the importance of attendance with your student. 6. Register for and regularly monitoring the Parent Portal is key to staying informed about your child's attendance and academic progress. Join our ‘All Day, Every Day’ initiative. Together, we can ensure every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed through consistent attendance. Volusia County Schools: Empowering a Culture of Excellence for your child's future, through consistent attendance, All Day, Every Day!

Resources for children should apply universally, not per familial wealth. "Many students who might qualify for a free meal won't take it because of the stigma, the embarrassment. When you offer it to everyone, it really levels the playing field. It allows more kids to get the nutrition they need to be successful." -Dan Gorman, food service director for local area public schools Education benefits the whole population, and proper access to nutritional resources enhances all investments into public schools. If we cannot universally feed and educate our children, what will the future hold for our society? #FeedTheChildren #CommunityBuilding #UniversalSchoolMeals
Last summer, Michigan made a historic investment in kids’ nutrition security by enacting a #UniversalSchoolMeals policy, providing all public school students with free breakfast and lunch. Now, families and school communities are seeing that investment pay off in a big way! From eliminating school lunch debt and its associated stigma, to allowing school nutrition staff to focus on improving nutritional quality rather than determining which kids can receive meals, the new policy means that students and staff alike can focus on the important things at school. I’m so glad to see the positive impact of this policy in Michigan. Now we need a federal policy to guarantee the same benefits in every state! https://lnkd.in/eMV-Uxbn

As Open Days are approaching, here is your guidance for: How to Choose a School for Your Child Few decisions carry as much weight as where to go to school, or which one to send your child to. Here’s how to do it properly and make an informed choice. Where to begin with choosing a school? It’s one of the biggest decisions you can make in your life, whether you’re a student deciding for yourself in conversation with your parents, or a parent setting out to find the perfect institution to mould and educate your child. Schooling, along with family, is one of the two most decisive factors in shaping our early lives, and so it’s worth taking a huge amount of care when choosing where to apply. What’s more, the timelines involved can stretch out to occasionally daunting lengths – in extreme cases, some schools require registering interest many years before a child is actually old enough to attend – and so being prepared and knowing how and where to look for information will take some of the stress and uncertainty out of the process. A good rule of thumb is to start your research two years before the start of the first school year in question. The first place to begin is by undertaking some simple fact-finding. Look at Ofsted’s reports on any potential schools you have heard about and are considering. The Telegraph’s schools guide makes for great background reading, while the Department for Education is another central, unbiased and reputable source of information which is updated on a yearly basis.
