On 8th-9th May, the TSLB (Tecnici Sanitari di Laboratorio Biomedico) held its 2nd National Congress in Rome, Italy named in honour of our colleague and past IFBLS Board member Alba Marzo who sadly died last year. Marie Culliton, President of IFBLS, along with Fernando Mendes, President of EPBS - European Association of Biomedical Scientists were invited to present their International Associations and to participate in a round table discussion on the following topics: 1. Educational system, basic training, specialist training, master, specialisation... How do you become a BLS in your countries? After the qualification, what training courses are available? What are the systems to take inspiration from? 2. Description of the National Health Service and role of BLS 3. The Biomedical Laboratory Scientists in research fields. 4. Relationship with other healthcare professionals 5. Professional development. How do you keep your skills update? Does the ECM system also exist in Europe? Are there any other types of professional training? 6. Attractiveness to study and professional progression 7. Professional responsibility at a legal level The session was very well received. The Italian Biomedical Scientists are on the right path in their development of the profession and know they have support in their work from IFBLS.
