The group, led by SIti Nursa (60), initially wove Nggoli cloth of the Bima-Dompu Mbojo tribe and other simple fabrics for personal use. However, their passion for preserving their local culture continued to grow after receiving support from PT Sumbawa Timur Mining (STM) in 2022. With STM's assistance, Kancira Daha managed to learn and produce Muna Pa'a, Dompu's traditional weaving that is rich in historical value. The process of making Muna Pa'a requires high accuracy and a longer time than the average weaving, but the results give satisfaction to the group members. In addition to preserving cultural heritage, this activity also helps improve their family's economy. Borneo, the third-largest island in the world has been a known source of diamonds for centuries. The diamond deposits of Borneo are believed to share with India the distinction of being the earliest worked diamond mines in the world. Borneo holds diamond deposits in Kalimantan that are exclusively alluvial and are clustered into areas on the western and southeastern portions of the island. In extreme western Kalimantan (Kalimantan Barat), deposits are known along the Landak River near Serimbu (north of the city of Ngabang), on the upper reaches of the Sekayam River, and on the Kapuas River near Sanggau just below its confluence with the Sekayam River. On the southeastern portion of the island (Kalimantan Selatan), the deposits are concentrated in rivers draining the Meratus Mountains, principally around Martarpura (GIA). Martapura is also known as the "City of Diamonds." It is the capital of the Banjar Regency and is well-known as the center of the diamond industry as well as the main diamond cutting and polishing center in Borneo. One of the most notable discoveries in Borneo is the The "Trisakti" diamond. It was discovered in August 1965 in the alluvial diamond deposits of Cempaka district of Martapura. The rough diamond weighed 166.75 carats. The diamond was cut into several parts and the largest part was transformed into a 50.53 carat emerald-cut pink diamond. #diamonds #Borneo #mining Image source: Far East Gem Institute - Green Macle

Originating from the mineral zoisite, Tanzanite is a unique gemstone with traces of vanadium that give it blue and violet hues. The only known source of Tanzanite is a small mining region, approximately seven kilometres in length and two kilometres wide, located in the Simanjiro district of Tanzania's Manyara region. But why isn't this gemstone attracting much expected income for Tanzania? My story on TRT Afrika. https://lnkd.in/dDmJTZ4h

De Beers group's CEO, Moses Madondo, highlighted at the Joburg Indaba that the supply of natural diamonds has peaked, with few new discoveries on the horizon. He emphasized that only one commercial discovery in the 21st century, the Luele mine in Angola, has been made, signaling a decline in global diamond production. Madondo outlined four phases of decline, from mine closures to production cuts, projecting a steady decrease through 2040. Madondo's strategy includes a shift towards highly engineered synthetic diamonds for industrial applications, distancing from producing lab-grown diamonds for the jewelry market. This ambitious move aims to position De Beers as a leader in the recovery of the diamond industry, integrating operations from upstream to downstream. As natural diamond supply diminishes, the price gap between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds is expected to widen rapidly in the near future.

Brazil’s diamond legacy holds one of the most rare diamonds in history, "The Moussaieff Red". The diamond is a 5.11 carat, Internally Flawless, Fancy Red diamond which weighed 13.90 carats in the rough, discovered by Brazilian miner named Ze Tatu in the state of Minas Gerais. Brazil's significance as a diamond producer spans three centuries, making it the world's longest continuous commercial source of diamonds. Diamonds were discovered in the early 1700s by artisanal miners searching for gold along the banks of the Jequitinhonha River in the state of Minas Gerais. For the next 150 years, Minas Gerais was the world's major supplier of gem diamonds. Today, Brazil's diamond production currently accounts for about 1% of the diamonds traded due to the subsequent vast diamond discoveries made across the globe. The diamond sources in Brazil are primarily alluvial, with diamonds transported by and deposited along several rivers and are found mainly by independent miners (garimpeiros) in riverbeds using simple tools and operating individually or in small groups. The diamonds are found as loose crystals obtained either by panning or dredging in the rivers, or by washing or breaking down the sediments that contain them. After decades of exploration for the primary source, some economically viable kimberlite pipes have been discovered (GIA). Brazil has produced some outstanding red diamonds. Red diamonds are extremely rare and exceptional. They are mostly found in sizes less than 1 carat and usually sell for over US $1 million per carat. Their utmost rarity and intense hue make them highly sought-after by investors and collectors. #Brazil #diamonds #mining Moussaieff - The Moussaieff Red Diamond

The Okavango Diamond Company’s Remarkable Journey Since 2019 Building on the background of the Botswana government and De Beers partnership through Debswana, we now turn to the significant progress made by the Okavango Diamond Company (ODC) from 2019 to 2024. The Botswana government and De Beers’ joint venture, Debswana, is responsible for diamond mining. Under the sales agreement, Debswana’s production is split between De Beers and ODC. The Okavango Diamond Company, wholly owned by the Botswana government, independently markets and sells a portion of these diamonds to enhance local beneficiation. The original sales agreement, initially set to expire in 2021, was extended multiple times due to COVID-19 and economic uncertainties. The new agreement, finalized in June 2023, extends the partnership for another 10 years. This renewal increased ODC’s share of Debswana’s production from 25% to 30%, with a phased plan to reach 50% over the next decade. This strategic move not only strengthens Botswana’s position in the global diamond market but also supports the country’s economic diversification efforts. ODC has made significant strides in various areas over the past five years. In 2019, the company’s diamond production entitlement was raised from 15% to 25%, enabling it to host diamond viewings in the UAE and Belgium, thereby securing its future and reinforcing its commitment to beneficiation. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, ODC continued its operations and provided essential support to local communities, showcasing its resilience and social responsibility. The company has also invested in advanced sorting technology and adopted the Galaxy system for improved diamond grading and pricing, ensuring it remains at the forefront of the diamond industry. In January 2024, ODC celebrated its 10th anniversary and is set to move to a new headquarters in mid-2024, enhancing its operational capacity and security measures. Looking ahead, ODC aims to increase its global rough diamond sales from over 5% to over 10% in the next decade, with a growth strategy that includes expanding its sales channels and forming strategic partnerships. In conclusion, the progress made by the Okavango Diamond Company over the past five years is a testament to Botswana’s strategic vision for its diamond industry. By increasing local beneficiation, adopting cutting-edge technology, and forming robust international partnerships, ODC is paving the way for a sustainable and prosperous future. As President Masisi aptly put it, Botswana is not merely an exporter of raw materials but an active and influential player in the global diamond market. #DiamondIndustry #NaturalDiamonds #LocalBeneficiation #MiningTechnology #SustainableDevelopment #BotswanaDiamonds

"✨Sakariya Mines & Minerals ✨ ⛰️Folds in geology result from the ductile deformation of rock layers under tectonic stress. ⛰️They consist of two main parts: limbs, representing the sides of the fold, and an axis, the central line along which the folding occurs. ⛰️The two fundamental types of folds are anticlines, where rock layers arch upwards, and synclines, characterized by downward-dipping layers.
